This role focuses on developing controls software features, health monitoring, and utilizing look-ahead and telematics data to optimize powertrain efficiency for fuel economy, reliability, and productivity. The Technical Adviser will collaborate with business units to integrate these solutions into production environments, ensuring a smooth transition from prototyping to marketplace. Key responsibilities include designing and prototyping next-generation software and controls, incorporating predictive and adaptive controls for powertrain optimization, developing health monitoring algorithms, and deploying machine learning algorithms. The role also involves collaborating with cross-functional teams and external partners, utilizing modern software development practices, providing technical leadership, and ensuring compliance with functional safety and cybersecurity standards.

In this role you will make an impact in the following ways:

  • Investigate electronic application and systems problems, understand causal mechanisms, recommend appropriate actions, and document results with guidance from more experienced team members.
  • Create, manage, improve, and apply electronic application and systems development processes and tools, including system specification, modeling and simulation, calibration, DVP&R, and troubleshooting.
  • Apply tools for simulation, calibration, and product life maintenance.
  • Obtain input from customers, technical and product teams, manufacturing engineers, supplier partners, and other stakeholders to deliver information and recommendations that lead to quality product decisions.
  • Make decisions in the areas of electronic and electrical system design, requirements, calibration, and test that impact the quality and performance of calibrated subsystems and feature classes of electronic subsystems.
  • Review work of less-experienced developers/testers to ensure robust, reusable, and efficient design.
  • Use systems knowledge and expertise to make decisions in the areas of electronic and electrical systems designs, requirements, calibration, and test that impact the quality and performance of calibrated builds and management of cross-BU integration and coordination.
  • Deliver independent execution of established and emerging work processes and systems, while still developing technology or product knowledge.
  • Coach and develop the next generation of technical experts.
  • Provide problem resolution leadership for complex systems with a high degree of ambiguity and often global business impact.
  • Lead the development and improvement of work processes and systems across functions within a global business unit or manage improvement across business units.
  • Coordinate and direct work of technical project teams, up to and including direct management of small to mid-sized teams.
  • Operate as the recognized multi-competency specialist or expert in a discipline or product area across a site or global business unit with responsibility for developing local talent (direct or indirect).
  • Coach and mentor other engineers, project managers, and cross-functional team members.
  • May include academic or industry collaboration in a competency or discipline area.

Responsibilities

To be successful in this role you will need the following:

  • Ph.D. in Engineering (Electrical, Computer, Mechanical) with 5 years of relevant industry experience, or Master’s degree with 10 years of experience.
  • Proven track record in embedded controls, real-time software development, connectivity (telematics or V2X), or machine learning/AI integration.
  • Expertise in controls software or health monitoring and diagnostics feature development.
  • Background in engine, hybrid, or EV powertrain systems, powertrain controls, or health monitoring.
  • Proficiency in modeling and simulation in Matlab, software development and prototyping through MIL/SIL/HIL and truck testing, and advanced controls and machine learning.
  • Ability to prototype quickly, iterate on solutions, and adapt to changing technological or market requirements.
  • Skilled at mentoring multidisciplinary teams and effectively communicating complex ideas to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
