We are looking for a talented Customer Engineering Product Specialist to join our team specializing in Engineering in Shoreview, MN.

In this role, you will make an impact in the following ways:
  • Strong Negotiation Skills: Effectively obtain input and negotiate with Subject Matter Experts and Value Package Introduction (VPI) Teams to deliver product data and installation requirements to Application Engineers and OEMs.
  • Decision-Making Abilities: Make informed decisions in product selection, design, and integration that positively impact OEM machine performance, optimization, and quality.
  • Process Improvement: Apply and enhance processes such as Installation Quality Assurance, OEM integration, and product selection. Utilize tools like Advisor, Cummins Online Specifications (COLS), and Global Customer Engineering (GCE) to support these processes and ensure high-quality decision-making.
  • Relationship Building: Develop strong working relationships with customer technical counterparts to serve as their primary liaison. This includes delivering specialized product technical information, managing product specifications, communicating product changes, resolving complex installation issues, and facilitating customer requests.
  • Technical Expertise: Apply your technical knowledge in product, application, and market areas to support OEM product selection and equipment design. Translate customer needs and "voice of the customer" into functional product requirements to provide input on program-related decisions.
  • Advocacy and Representation: Serve as a customer/market advocate within Cummins during new product development programs, design reviews, and product change request processes. Ensure products are applied and installed correctly to meet customer system requirements and environments.
  • Quality Assurance: Validate prototype machine performance and ensure installations meet Cummins requirements. Utilize Analysis Led Design (ALD) and Six Sigma tools to optimize product and system performance.
  • Leadership and Mentorship: Lead innovative customer-focused initiatives and projects. Assist with knowledge transfer through coaching and mentoring less experienced engineers. Provide independent leadership on smaller business impact projects or complex components, products, systems, or services.
  • Process and System Development: Lead the development and improvement of work processes and systems within your functional discipline area. Coordinate and direct work among technicians and temporary student employees, and influence technical direction within project teams.
  • Specialization and Proficiency: Operate as a recognized specialist in your discipline or product area within the immediate team. Continue to develop proficiency in critical competency areas to support your role effectively


Responsibilities

To be successful in this role you will need the following:
  • Machine Integration and Optimization: Combine various parts or sub-systems to achieve the desired output for customers. Apply Cummins' installation requirements using standard tools, processes, and best practices to optimize performance, reliability, cost, and quality. Analyze technical issues using proven problem-solving and troubleshooting techniques for rapid resolution.
  • Product Application Support: Ensure new product information is available by developing and managing accurate and complete technical content in a timely manner. Provide new options through the management of technical systems to support sales across all markets. Define installation requirements and develop innovative tools with in-depth, cross-system knowledge and industry experience for successful design and integration.
  • Product Function Modeling, Simulation, and Analysis: Impact product design decisions by utilizing and interpreting computational tools and methods that predict a product's function relative to its system, sub-system, and component level requirements.
  • Product Installation Quality: Identify and apply ways to improve machine integration to minimize rework and deliver the best product. Apply standard Cummins processes based on the experience and knowledge of product installation experts. Ensure products are installed correctly and meet requirements through an installation review process.
  • Product Problem Solving: Solve product problems using a process that protects the customer. Determine the assignable cause, implement robust, data-based solutions, and identify systemic root causes with recommended actions to prevent problem recurrence.
  • Product Selection: Guide customers to the best product offerings for their markets and applications. Offer best-fit solutions by optimizing product specifications to make Cummins' offerings easy to install into new applications. Represent features and benefits of products in terms customers understand and ensure products aren't misapplied using Cummins' technical information systems and local application requirements.
  • Technical Customer Management: Represent Cummins to customers by being the interface for all technical aspects. Provide engineering data, documentation, and training to support the design and integration of equipment. Ensure the customer's business is not interrupted by managing product changes through change processes and regular communication with Product Development and the customer.


Qualifications

Education, Licenses, Certifications:
  • College, university, or equivalent Bachelor's degree in Engineering or appropriate STEM field is required.
  • Post-graduate (Master's) degree relevant to this discipline area may be required for select roles.
  • This position may require licensing for compliance with export controls or sanctions regulations.

Experience:
  • Prior Senior or Lead Engineer equivalent work experience in a relevant discipline area is required with a demonstrated track record of technical problem solving and quality decision making.
  • Knowledge of MS Office tools is preferred

Additional Qualifications:
  • Switchgear - Requires a good understanding of typical low-voltage and medium voltage switchgear designs.
  • Generator Sets - Requires a good understanding of the typical features of medium sized (19kW to 4MW) diesel and gas generator sets. Position will require an understanding of the basic generator set controls used in paralleling applications.
  • Automatic Transfer Switches - Requires a good understanding of the typical features of an automatic transfer switch and the methods used to externally control their operation.
  • Power System Architecture - Requires a good understanding of the typical power system components that are frequently found at the incoming distribution level of industrial and commercial facilities.
  • Plans and Specifications - Requires a good understanding of how to read and review project plans and specifications.
  • System Control Components - Should have some experience with system control components found in paralleling applications. Position requires a basic capability to understand Allen Bradley and Schneider PLC code.
  • Communication Networks - Requires some experience with the hardware, software and protocols of common industrial communication networks such as ModBus RTU, Modbus TCP/IP, and BacNet. Should have some experience configuring managed Ethernet switches using vendor recommended settings or completing the settings with some supervision and the fundamentals of Ethernet networks.
  • Project Drawings - Requires a good understanding of different types of typical project drawings: Elevation, Plan-view, One-line, Three-line, Schematic, Interconnect, and Riser. Position will require the use of AutoCAD Electrical to produce simple drawings or update existing drawings. Previous CAD experience preferred.
  • Operating Sequences - Requires a good understanding of typical power system sequences and be able to read and review a sequence of operation and understand how the major components of a system are expected to operate. Based upon written sequences, must be able to explain how the system should operate and be able to anticipate common first-level failures and the impacts to the power system.
  • Protective Relays - Requires a good understanding of power system protective relaying principles and hardware.
  • Safety - Must be willing to follow Cummins safety policies and procedures and also willing to follow site specific requirements as communicated by site facility personnel and adhere to the more stringent of the two.
