Summary of Position

The Principal Calibration Technician is responsible for ensuring the accuracy and reliability of process instrumentation through pre-commissioning, calibration, and troubleshooting activities. This role involves working with a diverse range of instruments, including those measuring system pressures, weights, temperatures, conductivity, pH, levels, flow, and density.


The ideal candidate is a problem solver with a solid foundation in electrical theory and its practical applications. They will excel in inspecting, calibrating, measuring, and testing equipment at regular intervals, adhering to established procedures and using tools traceable to nationally recognized standards.


Schedule: Monday - Friday 6am - 2:30pm

Essential Functions

  • Perform pre-commissioning, calibration, and troubleshooting of process instrumentation.
  • Conduct single-point and loop calibrations using tools such as multimeters, frequency calibrators, standardized weights, pressure calibrators, flow meters, digital pressure indicators, RTD calibrators, digital manometers, and digital tachometers.
  • Ensure compliance with established calibration procedures and national standards.
  • Train and mentor junior technicians to build their technical expertise and maintain high operational standards.
  • Maintain detailed records of calibration activities and generate necessary reports.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to troubleshoot instrumentation issues and improve system performance.
  • This role demands precision, technical expertise, and a strong commitment to upholding the highest standards of instrument calibration and system reliability.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot issues with plant equipment to optimize performance.
  • Implement equipment modifications, upgrades, and replacements as needed.
  • Perform predictive and preventive maintenance to minimize downtime and enhance equipment longevity.
  • Conduct routine repairs on instrumentation and electrical components, following plant work instructions and safety protocols.
  • Perform safety observations and proactively mitigate potential hazards.
  • Inspect, calibrate, and maintain process and critical utility instrumentation for accuracy and functionality.
  • Utilize calibrated test equipment for measurements and inspections.
  • Install and upgrade control instrumentation as part of routine maintenance activities.
  • Complete pre-task analyses for maintenance activities to identify risks and ensure safe work practices.
  • Support plant operations through other assigned duties as required.
  • Must maintain operational compliance with US and international regulatory agencies and guidelines (i.e. FDA, EU, HC, TGA, PIC/S, ISO, USP, NRC, cGMP, etc.).

Requirements

  • Associate Degree in Applied Science or completion of a technical certification program with an emphasis on instrumentation controls. Equivalent relevant experience may be considered in place of formal education.
  • 6 or more years of relevant experience in a manufacturing environment required.
  • Experience with FDA regulations and CGMP guidelines is a plus.
  • Proficiency in calibrating, troubleshooting, and repairing process control instrumentation.
  • Strong understanding of Lock-Out/Tag-Out procedures and OSHA safety practices.
  • Experience with multimeters, frequency calibrators, and flow meters is required. Familiarity with loop calibrations is a plus.


Working Conditions:

  • Willingness to work in plant producing radioactive materials and requiring all employees to participate in safety programs designed to minimize potential and/or actual exposure levels.
  • Responsibilities include the ability to lift up to 70 pounds, kneeling, crouching, twisting the upper body, walking, bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, reaching, must be able to physically negotiate stairs and evacuation ladders with or without accommodation, wear and operate safety equipment, enter vessels, and inspect equipment.
  • Material handling devices (e.g., hand truck, fork truck, and conveyors) are used when possible, however, use of proper lifting and movement techniques is necessary to prevent injury.
  • Must be willing to wear a variety of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and hearing protection as needed.
  • May be required to sit or stand for long periods of 8 hours a day while performing duties.
  • Must possess good hand-eye coordination; close attention to detail is required.
  • Must be able to work indoors and outdoors with exposure to mechanical/moving parts, hazards including corrosive, flammable and toxic material, dust, dirt, odors, and irritants.
  • Willingness to complete safety training within allotted timeframes, and work in a team-based environment.
  • Must be able to work outside of regular work hours, including off shift, weekend, and holiday work as business needs require.
