Primary Purpose:

Support the implementation, coordination, and development of behavior interventions as part of the district’s Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS). The role includes working with students, teachers, staff, and families to improve student behavior outcomes, support social-emotional learning (SEL), and contribute to creating a positive school culture. The Behavior Specialist will conduct assessments, provide direct interventions, develop behavior plans, and collaborate with the school community to ensure that students receive the necessary support to succeed academically and socially.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

Bachelor’s degree from accredited university

Special Knowledge/Skills:

• Understanding of the MTSS Framework
• Ability to analyze behavioral data to determine the intensity and type of interventions needed at each tier
• Knowledge of evidence-based behavioral strategies
• Ability to train staff on behavioral interventions, de-escalation techniques, and the MTSS process
• Ability to write routine reports and correspondence
• Ability to speak effectively before staff, students, and parents
• Ability to utilize basic math functions to interpret ratios and bar graphs
• Ability to apply understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form
• Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations
• Ability to apply Positive Behavior Interventions and Strategies

Experience:

• At least 3 years of experience working with students in a school or educational setting, focusing on behavior management and intervention.
• Experience with conducting functional behavior assessments and developing behavior intervention plans.
• Experience using data collection methods such as frequency counts, ABC charts and other behavior tracking tools.

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

• Provide direct services to students needing behavior intervention, including one-on-one or small group support.
• Monitor and track student progress on behavior goals, adjusting interventions as needed.
• Collaborate with general education teachers, counselors, administrators, and other school professionals to ensure the consistent application of behavior interventions and supports.
• Participate in Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) meetings to discuss student progress, behavior interventions, and the need for further support.
• Facilitate professional development and training for staff on evidence-based behavioral strategies and SEL practices.
• Work with families to develop home behavior strategies and encourage family involvement in the behavior intervention process.
• Collect and analyze data on student behavior, intervention efficacy, and overall progress.
• Use data to refine and adapt interventions, ensuring they are appropriate to student needs and aligned with MTSS principles.
• Regularly report progress to parents, school administrators, and other stakeholders.
• Implement and monitor Tier 2 and Tier 3 behavior interventions within the MTSS framework.
• Assist in developing and implementing school-wide Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) or other proactive behavior management systems.
• Support teachers in implementing Tier 1 behavior strategies and classroom management practices.
• Provide crisis intervention and de-escalation support when necessary, ensuring the safety and well-being of students and staff.
• Train and mentor school staff on effective behavior management techniques, de-escalation strategies, and the use of data to inform practice.
• Promote a school-wide culture of empathy, respect, and inclusivity by providing ongoing professional development around SEL and trauma-informed practices.
• Ensure that behavior plans and interventions align with district policies, special education regulations, and best practices in behavior management.
• Maintain detailed records of behavior assessments, interventions, meetings, and progress reports in compliance with state and federal regulations.
• A commitment to ongoing professional development and learning.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

            Supervise assigned teacher aide(s)

            Serve as mentor to student teachers
