THIS ROLE: 

The Dredge Superintendent is ultimately responsible for the dredge, the dredge crew, and the daily operation and function of the dredge and all auxiliary equipment. This position works closely with the senior dredge captain, dredge captain/chief, port captain/engineer, project manager and shoreside staff on operation, maintenance, planning, daily reporting, crewing, strategizing, and overall project logistics. The dredge superintendent is responsible for performance of the dredge and its auxiliary fleet; and how to effectively use resources to make sure schedule and production are driven to accomplish project goals.

 

WHAT YOU’LL DO:     


Responsible for all dredging operations of assigned dredge including:

  • Lead the mobilization and demobilization of the dredge for projects including critical path planning for timelines, necessary parts/consumables, preparing the barge to be towed, etc.
  • Assist with coordination of site logistics and various moving parts to maximize efficiency and safe operations including tugboats, crew changes, scow timing, etc.
  • Foster an environment on the dredge of critical thinking relating to safety, efficiencies and production and constantly work to refine and streamline all operations
  • Work with Project Manager for daily and long-term digging plans and follow up daily on the project’s progress to adapt dredging operations accordingly
  • Comply with all relevant regulations concerning dredge operation

 


Responsible for the overall maintenance and repair as well as general operational state and readiness of assigned dredge & project sites including:

  • Create and maintain an inventory of critical spares for all systems
  • Maintain a working inventory of all consumables, rigging, lines, etc. Including the logging of all fuels, lubes, potable water along with any other items critical to dredge operations.  Coordinating the procurement of those items is also a key responsibility
  • Assist in development of and own the implementation of all preventative maintenance, inspections, and general task schedules including: greasing, housekeeping, wire gauging, etc.
  • Lead the Health, Safety, and Environmental compliance of the dredge
  • Complete Job Safety Analysis (JSA) and/or Activity Hazard Analysis (AHA), near miss and incident reports as necessary, and lead daily safety meetings on board
  • Lead the purchasing function for all staff on the dredge including reviewing/approving requisitions, proactively planning orders of consumables, checking in items that have been delivered, etc.
  • Provide daily updates to stakeholders including daily work plans, projects completed, projects forecasted, etc.
  • Prepare for and lead inspections of the dredge performed by various government agencies such as United States Coast Guard, American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), and Army Corps of Engineers
  • Lead the dredge through maintenance periods and drydocking by assisting in the creation of work scopes for the shipyard, supervising all contractors/shipyard workers aboard, etc.
  • Drive and develop Standard Operations Procedures (SOPs) for tasks specific to dredges such as bucket changes, greasing, scow landing, etc.
  • Visit and oversee project sites as needed during mobilization, construction, and demobilization phases


Champion for success of dredge leadership and crews on board

  • Provide training to dredge leadership and crews
  • Assist the dredge captain and chief in their duties; fill in as acting Dredge Captain as needed. When acting dredge captain, you are responsible to:
    • Directly supervise all other staff including chief engineers, operators, deckhands, and cooks; and oversee the tugboats working in support of the dredge.
    • Develop and assign tasks to crew and direct the work
    • Set work plan for opposite crew shift and follow up the next day
    • Prepare and submit weekly payroll time sheets
    • Train crews
    • Conduct crew evaluations
    • Address complaints, resolve problems and discipline crew as needed

 

Daily Duties Include, in addition:

  • Build Dredge Plan with Project Manager, Dredge Captains, and Operators
  • Setting expectations with the Dredge Crew
  • Coordinate with Crewing team on changes to Crews
  • Review Daily Logs of supplies and inventory levels
  • Review and approve purchases
  • Coordinate corrective or routine maintenance activities
  • Coordinate with Project Manager on logistics for dredge projects
  • Supervise auxiliary equipment operations such as offloaders, tugboats, crewboats, etc.

 

WHO YOU ARE:


Certifications and Other Requirements


  • NCCCO LBC (Lattice Boom Crawler) Certification
  • MMC Ordinary Seaman (Preferred)

  • Demonstrated knowledge of dredging specifications.
  • Ability to identify and anticipate task sequence conflicts.

  • Ability to multi-task and work efficiently in an environment with many interruptions.
  • Ability to get along with office staff and crewmembers
  • Confidence to initiate correspondence with crewmembers and staff.
  • Work outside as well as on board a vessel.
  • Must comply with all work rules, including those that pertain to safety and health.

Physical Aptitudes

  • Must meet “fit for duty” requirements upon job offer (pre-employment physical and drug test).
  • The employee must meet physical requirements including but not limited to: walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, climbing up/down ladders and stairs, negotiating uneven and moving surfaces.
  • Must be able to climb onto tugs, barges and up and down ladders.
  • Must be able to work in difficult conditions with exposure to all weather conditions (rain, ice, snow, wind, heat, etc.)
  • Ability to work when exposed to odors, dust, dirt, mechanical hazards, high noise levels, and potentially hazardous equipment.
