THIS ROLE:
As a Sr. Cost Accountant at Curtin Maritime, you will support the finance & accounting team with day to day accounting responsibilities.
Key Responsibilities:
Percent-of-Completion Reporting:
• Lead the percent-of-completion (POC) accounting process to ensure accurate revenue recognition and project performance tracking.
• Collaborate with senior project managers and operations leaders to assess project progress, cost-to-complete estimates, and milestone-based revenue recognition.
• Prepare and present in-depth POC reports, including variance analysis, profitability forecasts, and project performance trends.
• Ensure compliance with ASC 606 and other accounting standards related to revenue recognition and POC reporting.
Cost Accounting:
• Oversee all cost accounting functions, including project cost tracking, and financial reporting.
• Analyze and allocate costs associated with dredging and marine construction projects, including labor, materials, subcontractor costs, and equipment usage.
• Identify trends, variances, and opportunities for cost optimization, providing actionable insights to executive leadership.
• Manage monthly and year-end closing processes, including cost reconciliations, accruals, and adjustments.
Promoting Proper Job Coding:
• Champion proper job coding practices across all projects to ensure accurate cost allocation and financial reporting.
• Develop and implement standardized job coding structures for various project activities and ensure adherence by all stakeholders.
• Conduct regular audits of job coding processes, resolve discrepancies, and recommend process improvements.
• Train project managers and operational teams on the importance and application of proper job coding methodologies.
Leadership & Collaboration:
• Serve as a key financial partner to senior management, providing strategic insights and recommendations to improve project profitability and operational efficiency.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including engineering, operations, and contracts, to align financial strategies with project goals.
• Monitor the financial impact of change orders, scope modifications, and other project adjustments.
Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA/CMA certification highly preferred).
• 5 years of experience in cost accounting, with at least 3 years in the construction, dredging, or heavy civil industries preferred.
• Advanced knowledge of percent-of-completion accounting, job costing, and revenue recognition principles (ASC 606 experience required).
• Proficiency in accounting software and ERP systems.
• Advanced Excel skills, including financial modeling, pivot tables, and data analysis.
• Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities.
• Familiarity with dredging and marine construction industry practices is a strong advantage.
