Job Description : Traffic Signal ForemanJob SummaryThe Traffic Signal Foreman is responsible for managing the installation, maintenance, and repair of traffic signal systems, street lighting, and associated infrastructure. This position involves supervising a team of installers, ensuring projects are completed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with applicable regulations. The foreman also coordinates with city / state representatives and troubleshoots technical issues to ensure the smooth operation of traffic signal systems.Key Responsibilities
- Supervise, lead, and train a team of traffic signal installers and laborers.
- Install, maintain, and repair traffic signal systems, including traffic lights, pedestrian signals, loop detection, and video detection.
- Understand and work with traffic signal phasing, camera detection systems, pedestrian pushbuttons, radio and fiber communications, and cabinet terminations.
- Communicate effectively with traffic signal agencies (e.g., VDOT, municipalities) and vendors to coordinate work.
- Troubleshoot and resolve issues with TS-1, TS-2, and ATC cabinets, including programming flashing yellows and installing cabinets and appurtenances.
- Diagnose malfunctions in traffic signal equipment, including electrical problems, signal timing, and communication failures.
- Troubleshoot and implement controlled lighting systems with technical support as needed.
- Conduct routine inspections of traffic signal equipment to ensure proper functioning and regulatory compliance.
- Oversee the testing, installation, and commissioning of traffic signal equipment.
- Ensure adherence to safety protocols and compliance with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and other standards.
- Respond to emergency situations, such as power outages, severe weather, or urgent signal repairs, to ensure public safety.
- Travel and stay overnight as required and handle after-hours service calls when necessary.Skills and Competencies
- Comprehensive knowledge of traffic signal systems, electrical wiring, and control equipment.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical manuals.
- Proficiency in troubleshooting electrical, electronic, and communication systems.
- Strong communication skills to interact with team members and contractors.
- Effective leadership and problem-solving abilities to address technical and operational challenges.
- Proficiency with hand tools, power tools, and specialized equipment.Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent (vocational training or certifications in electrical / electronics preferred).
- IMSA Level II certification (preferred).
- Valid driver's license (CDL preferred), electrical background strongly desired.
- Previous experience in traffic signal maintenance, electrical systems, or a related field is highly desirable.
- Familiarity with traffic signal programming, diagnostics software, and advanced traffic systems.
- Strong physical capability to lift heavy equipment, work at heights, and perform tasks requiring extended periods of standing.
