The Senior Director of Transportation will be responsible for managing the execution, direction, and coordination of all Intermodal drayage for asset-based operations in California. This includes all dispatch, driver, and equipment management, within the organization to maximize asset utilization and optimize resources within Intermodal Operations. You will be executing strategic planning to meet and exceed the service level KPI’s and deliverables of our current and future customers. Your involvement in the use of our TMS and related tools to ensure data accuracy, safety measures, and customer service to billing completion is an essential function. You will work with all functional departments to further our strategy for safety, continuous improvement, long-term growth, profitability, and customer value while always maintaining the integrity of the company and customers.

Custom Goods including Quik Pick Express and Custom Air Trucking is in a period of dynamic growth and wants to align with forward-thinking analytical people to meet the demands of our customers and continue growth in California and additional markets over the coming months/years.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Responsible for multiple locations managing within the Quik Pick Express and Custom Air Transportation asset-based employee driver model both in Carson and Oakland with up to a hundred company drivers as dictated by business model moving 50,000 containers per year from US ports to deconsolidation distribution centers and direct to customer warehouse locations
  • Work closely with harbor management while participating in port meetings including involvement in the HTA, CTA, or other associations to ensure we have the most current vital details and knowledge
  • Must have high-level entrepreneurial skills and the ability to adapt and adjust to a frequently changing environment
  • Thorough knowledge of Harbor operations at the Ports of LA/LB and Oakland Drayage operations
  • Further develop and enhance the strategic business plan to accomplish the established growth and profitability objectives
  • Provide for management training and employee development with programs to ensure a best-in-class solutions and teams availability with succession plan in play for all team members
  • Establish best practices through continuous improvement while driving profitability through KPIs, deliverables, and customer satisfaction
  • Participation and interaction with senior-level Executives of our clients and partners
  • Participate in the development and execution of contract proposals, and the P&L impact accordingly
  • Responsible for the efficient use of a fleet of company assets, including trucks, chassis, and other related equipment
  • Able to act promptly in emergency situations under normal and adverse conditions and be able to present solutions in line with our company objectives to support our customer and company profile
  • Minimum five to seven years’ experience in director or above roles within the Intermodal / Drayage industry
  • Budget and full P L Planning and management
    • Support and develop budgets for relevant departments.
    • Financial forecasting and planning
  • Knowledge of and oversee all driver recruiting activities including driver onboarding and performance evaluations process
  • Management of the dispatch department including strategy, and KPI tracking
  • Knowledge of all applicable laws affecting drivers and service-related issues (hours of service, size and weight limits, best safety practices, etc.)
  • Inspires the trust of others; works with integrity and ethics; upholds organizational values
  • Bi-lingual (Spanish speaking) preferred given the current workforce in the industry
  • Understand and ensure the execution of all the processes below:
  • Accident and Injury procedures
  • OSHA training and regulations
  • Fueling procedures
  • Pre and post trip inspections
  • DOT compliance
  • Knowledge of U.S. Customs and Border Security Regulations as well as Bonded movements
  • Possesses a strong work ethic and desire to achieve sustainable results and improvements
  • In depth knowledge of TMS including Trinium, Silver Bullet, and other systems as needed and appropriate

ESSENTIAL DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Interface and report to Company Executives, SVP of Transportation, and Management Team to collect all information needed for successful daily and weekly results against plan
  • Work with all levels of Custom Goods in support of our customers and company objectives.
  • We must be able to reach out to other teams within the organization for consensus and support to further our ability to deliver on our customers’ needs and support Custom Goods growth in our principles
  • Maintain relationships with existing internal and external customers as appropriate
  • Gather appropriate information about the local drayage trucking market concerning pricing, competitor information and supply chain availability
  • Managing the dispatch function relating to creating capacity, maximizing productivity, and ensuring prompt and efficient service to our customers
  • Collaborate directly with clients to understand their supply chain needs, transportation management, drayage services, warehousing, transload, and related processes
  • Track and analyze daily operations efficiency measures/identify/implement best practices and initiate change
  • Ensure transportation compliance through D.O.T. regulations and other government entities
  • Manage/Maintain developed company policies and procedures to include Company Policy Work Rules and Safety Work Rules and to ensure employee compliance with all company policies
  • Ensure that all goals, values, and mandates set within the company’s Mission Statement are continuously reviewed, understood, and practiced promoting organizational values and safety compliance procedures with drivers and all staff
  • Management responsibilities of your team:
    • Manage, coach, and develop the team to meet operational goals
    • Develop and maintain an organizational plan and training that ensures employee growth and development
    • Take needed and appropriate action with explanations, appropriate documentation when there are gaps in the performance of employees and team members
    • Develop SOP’s, desk procedures, and ability to build succession plan in all responsible departments
  • Special projects as assigned by senior management

ORGANIZATIONAL ARRANGEMENTS:

  • Accountable to: CEO, COO, CFO Custom Goods, LLC
  • Reporting to: SVP of Transportation Custom Goods, LLC
  • Other Accountabilities: Operations VP’s, Sr Directors, Directors, Managers, Safety Director, Safety, Maintenance, and other related business partners and teams within the Custom Goods family
  • This Job Title manages the following Job Titles:
    • Director of QPE Transportation, Director of CAT Transportation, Dispatch and Customer Service Operations, and others as appropriate and directed
    • Involvement in Safety with Sr. Director of Safety, driver recruitment, and associated partners necessary
WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

  • Physical environment consistent with industrial environment, lifting, bending, seated for extended periods of time, and as required for daily activity, training, and observing functional applications
  • May be some limited travel not to exceed 25% to other locations including Oakland, Houston, South Carolina, or others as deemed needed and appropriate
  • Sight is typical of a trucking company, and drayage equipment is consistently moving in our local yards, all safe job procedures are critical to operation
  • Personal protective equipment may be required when outside of the office space, typical of high visibility vest and appropriate foot attire, and may include protective eye wear, or safety hard hats depending on site requirements
