What are the responsibilities and job description for the Education Coordinator position at Custom House Maritime Museum?
The Custom House Maritime Museum is currently seeking an education coordinator to lead/assist with programs for K-12 aged kids. We are entering a new phase of the museum's development which will focus on making the space more accessible for children and school groups. At the moment, our main group is the Boys and Girls Club of Salisbury, twice a week, 3rd and 4th grades. We are expanding our education programs to include more school visits and field trips, maker-spaces, and a brand new Discovery Center which will take up the majority of the ground floor of the museum. Please be advised that the Custom House is a historic building and is not accessible for those with limited mobility.
Requirements
- Major in history, education, museum education/studies, marine biology/science, biology, or other relevant major
- Ability to stand for extended periods of time; ability to lift up to 30 pounds; comfortable working outdoors
- Experience working with school-age kids, especially grades 3-6.
- An interest in history and education, desire to teach
- Strong written and verbal communication skills; strong intrapersonal skills
- Ability to plan and execute crafts and activities for school-aged kids
- Proficiency with Microsoft and Google suites
- Ability to think on your feet/flexibility a must
- Feel comfortable speaking in front of groups
- Experience leading a classroom a plus
- Knowledge of maritime history (especially in New England) a plus
- Experience handling tools a plus
Duties
- Plan and lead educational programs for Boys and Girls Club trips and other school trips under the direct supervision of the Collections/Programs Manager
- Strong assist with Collections/Programs Manager planning and running Saturday Kids Day programs from July to September (includes setup and breakdown, running indoor and outdoor activities)
- Work with the museum's Director and Collections/Programs manager to develop new children's programs that connect Newburyport's maritime history with the scope and stories of the museum and museum collections.
- Create and maintain a database/network of local educators and organizations and their contact information
- Work collaboratively with local educators to develop new programs that fit into their curriculum; expand education programs to include local schools, field trips, etc.
- Assist in the development of the museum's new Discovery Center
- Develop interactive elements and educational materials for younger visitors to the museum (i.e. treasure hunts, guides for a kid-oriented tour, etc.)
- Assist in the development of lesson plans in accordance with state guidelines alongside the museum's education committee; attend monthly education committee meetings
