What are the responsibilities and job description for the Shipping & Receiving Clerk position at Custom Manufacturing and Engineering?
Position Overview: Custom Manufacturing & Engineering, Inc. (CME) is seeking a detail-oriented Shipping & Receiving Warehouse Clerk to manage the flow of thousands of parts and materials. Responsibilities include receiving and accounting for inbound deliveries, performing kitting tasks, and ensuring timely, accurate shipments. Candidates must have strong organizational skills, be able to follow directions, work well with repetitive tasks, and be available every other Friday as needed.
Essential Functions:
- Inspect contents and compare with records to verify accuracy of incoming or outgoing shipments.
- Prepare documents such as work orders, bills of lading, and shipping orders to route materials.
- Record shipment data, including weight, charges, space availability, damages, and discrepancies for reporting, accounting, and recordkeeping purposes.
- Contact carrier representatives and issue instructions for shipping and delivery of materials.
- Pack, seal, label, and affix postage to prepare materials for shipping using hand tools, power tools, and postage meters.
- Work with shipping representatives to resolve issues such as damages, shortages, and nonconformance to specifications.
- Requisition and store shipping materials and supplies to maintain stock inventory.
- Transfer received materials to quality inspection or warehouse, ensuring accurate inventory control and stocking of all parts.
- Administer material transfer activities between the warehouse and shop floor.
- Perform kitting of components for production or shipment, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and proper labeling of each kit.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area in compliance with company procedures.
Experience & Skills:
- At least two (2) years of experience preferred in a shipping and receiving department, preferably in a manufacturing environment.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Comfortable performing repetitive tasks and following standardized processes.
- Ability to follow both written and verbal instructions.
- Knowledge of administrative and clerical procedures, including word processing, file management, and recordkeeping.
- Familiarity with warehouse processes and shipping/receiving best practices.
- Understanding of transportation methods (air, rail, sea, road) and their associated costs and benefits.
- Experience with warehouse ERP software (e.g., Deltek Costpoint) preferred.
- Effective communication skills across all levels of the organization.
- Ability to identify and resolve process issues or escalate with recommendations.
- Capable of prioritizing and responding with urgency to shipping and receiving needs.
- Forklift driver certification is a plus.
- Knowledge of DCMA procedures is helpful.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
- Ability to routinely lift items weighing between 30-50 pounds
- Primarily office/warehouse-based.
- Travel (0%-5%) may be required.
Minimum Required Education:
- High School diploma or AA/AS degree (trade or tech school) from an Accredited College/University
Other Requirements:
- Positions with CME require access to controlled goods and technologies subject to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations or the Export Administration Regulations. Applicants must be "U.S. Persons" as defined in these regulations.
