Job Summary:
The Powder Coating Technician is responsible for preparing, coating, and curing metal parts and components to ensure a durable and high-quality finish. This role requires knowledge of surface preparation, powder application techniques, and curing processes to meet company and industry standards. The Powder Coating Technician plays a key role in ensuring finished products are free from defects, adhere to proper thickness, and meet customer specifications while maintaining safety and efficiency in the coating process.
Key Responsibilities:
Powder Coating Application & Finishing
- Prepare metal surfaces by cleaning, degreasing, masking, and sandblasting as required.
- Operate powder coating guns, booths, and curing ovens to apply an even and consistent finish.
- Ensure proper powder thickness and adhesion according to work order specifications.
- Maintain consistency in color, texture, and quality throughout the coating process.
- Monitor curing oven temperatures and times to ensure proper hardening of coatings.
Surface Preparation & Quality Control
- Inspect metal parts before coating to identify defects, rust, or contamination.
- Use tape measures, calipers, and mil thickness gauges to verify coating thickness.
- Perform touch-ups and reworks as necessary to meet quality standards.
- Ensure 98% first-pass quality rate to minimize rework.
Equipment Maintenance & Safety Compliance
- Follow all OSHA and company safety procedures, including proper PPE usage (respirators, gloves, protective suits).
- Maintain and clean powder coating equipment, spray guns, and booths regularly.
- Ensure proper ventilation and filtration systems are functioning.
- Properly store and handle powder coating materials and chemicals to prevent contamination or waste.
Workflow & Efficiency
- Ensure on-time completion of coating jobs, meeting or exceeding production deadlines.
- Minimize material waste and overspray to improve efficiency.
- Accurately and consistently use the company’s ERP system to document work time, inventory usage, job progress, and any other required information in a timely manner.
- Work closely with fabrication, assembly, and shipping teams to ensure a smooth production flow.
- Track inventory of powder materials and supplies to prevent shortages.
Performance Metrics:
- Coating Quality: Maintain a 98% first-pass yield rate, minimizing rework and defects.
- Production Efficiency: Complete coating tasks within 5% of estimated time to meet production goals.
- Thickness Accuracy: Ensure 100% compliance with powder thickness specifications using mil thickness gauges.
- Safety Compliance: Maintain zero safety violations and follow OSHA regulations.
Qualifications & Skills:
- Experience:
- 1 years of experience in powder coating, industrial painting, or a related finishing role.
- Technical Skills:
- Knowledge of powder coating application methods, curing processes, and surface preparation techniques.
- Ability to operate electrostatic powder spray guns, ovens, and sandblasting equipment.
- Familiarity with coating thickness testing and visual inspection standards.
- Ability to read and interpret work orders, color codes, and coating specifications.
- Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and stand for extended periods.
- Comfortable working in high-temperature curing environments.
- Ability to wear respirators and protective clothing as required.
- Soft Skills:
- Strong attention to detail to ensure high-quality coatings.
- Ability to work independently and in a team-oriented environment.
- Good problem-solving skills for troubleshooting coating defects.
Flexibility Requirement:
Due to the dynamic nature of our production process, all employees are expected to be flexible in their work assignments. If there is a temporary shortage of work in your primary department or craft, you may be assigned to assist in other departments or perform tasks outside your usual scope of work. Refusal to accept such assignments may result in being sent home without pay for that period. This ensures continuous workflow and supports overall company productivity.

Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $14.00 - $16.00 per hour
Expected hours: 40 per week
