GENERAL DUTIES:

The Aerial lift operator must perform vegetation management including line clearance by performing a wide range of tasks while in the Aerial lift platform.

  • Plans, assigns, directs, checks, and coordinates work.
  • Responsible for quality and quantity of production and for following safe practices and rules while clearing and trimming trees and brush away from utility lines.
  • Must be familiar with the electrical hazard.
  • Removes branches and tree material.
  • Operates a Bucket near energized lines.
  • Cleans up and disposes of all debris.
  • Operates and services equipment, such as gasoline, hydraulic tools, power saws, power winches, bucket, chipper, and sprayers.
  • Uses hand-tools, such as axes, hand-lines, saws, block and tackle, pruners, etc.
  • Obtains written or oral permission from property owners to trim or remove trees or perform other work on property. Arranges with customer or property owner to obtain access, advises of interruption, explains work to be done, etc.
  • Promotes and maintains good customer and public relations through the effective accomplishment of assigned work and the appropriate behavior of employees on the crew.
  • Safeguards employees and the public from hazards in and around work area.
  • Cooperates with customers, police, and fire departments when blocking street or driveways.
  • Sets up barriers, warning signs, flags, markers, etc. to protect employees and public.
  • Performs tree and bucket rescue.
  • Works near energized parts or equipment.
  • Works in traffic.
  • Possesses working knowledge and be able to identify tree and shrub species.
  • Exposed to hazards of working near power equipment, traffic, high voltage wires, and falling limbs.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Due to the inherently dangerous nature of the industry and requirements to work with or around hazardous equipment, employees must be able to maintain attention and concentration for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to wear necessary PPE as per task assigned.
  • Uses machines, tools, equipment, and work aides used include chainsaws, hydraulic tools, and hand tools as required.
  • Must be able to safely drive an approved company vehicle if required.
  • Must be able to stand for extended periods of time.
  • Must be familiar with electrical hazards.
  • Must be able to enter and exit a vehicle numerous times a day.
  • Must be able to traverse various terrains.
  • Must be able to write, read and comprehend written and verbal job instructions/information.
  • Must be able to communicate with others.
  • Must be able to work well in a team environment as well as independently.
  • Must be able to maintain attention during dangerous tasks.
  • Must have endurance necessary to perform these duties throughout a standard eight or ten hour day.
  • Must be able to work long hours and overtime during emergencies, including holidays and weekends.
  • Required to report and/or travel for storm emergencies.
  • Must be able to operate and service all required tools and equipment.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from the start-up location.
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug test.
  • Must pass a background check according to region guidelines.
  • Must have a valid driver's license; a CDL is preferred.

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL FUNCTIONS & WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Must have the ability to work outside in all weather conditions including sun, rain, wind, snow, hot and cold temperatures etc.
  • Must have the ability to work around and directly with hazardous equipment.
  • Must have the ability to work around excessive noise from machines, chain saws, wood chipper, etc. with hearing protection.
  • Must have the ability to perform physical labor requiring continual and repetitive use of gross motor skills to stand, walk, sit, bend, stoop, crawl, crouch, drag, push, pull, twist, turn, stretch, reach, and continual and repetitive use of fine motor skills and manual dexterity.
  • Must have the ability to lift, carry, push, pull and maneuver objects weighing up to 10 pounds frequently, and occasionally lift, carry, push, pull and maneuver objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • May be exposed to nature i.e., irritating plants and biting or stinging insects, reptiles and dust.
  • May be exposed to dogs and other animals.
  • Must have the ability to maintain balance and work safely on steep slopes and uneven ground.
  • Must have the ability to work at varying heights, can be up to and in excess of 50 feet.
  • Must have the ability to see and hear. Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception in order to judge distances. Must also have good hand-to-eye coordination to get and use the appropriate equipment and tools.
  • May be exposed to and have to work around falling limbs.
  • May be exposed to traffic hazards.

ESSENTIAL SAFETY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Recognizing and recording hazards on the work site onto a Job Briefing form and recording the utility powerline voltage using the MAD chart before performing any task.
  • Aerial operator shall comply with all safety policy’s and training through TCIA and be Certified as a qualified line clearance Aerial lift operator.
  • Aerial lift operator shall apply sound principles of safety and good judgment in the application of outrigger placement, and leveling of Aerial lift, Aerial operator can setup Aerial lift, rotate boom clockwise and counter clockwise, can operate the elevator, maneuver under and over utility powerlines, so that they never break minimum approach distance. Never maneuver the Aerial boom between utility powerline primary and neutral phases. Operator shall be able to operate upper and lower controls.
  • Aerial operator shall be able to pass TCIA skills tests on rigging techniques of tree limbs, overhanging utility powerlines, utilizing handsaw to remove limbs, TCIA skill level knowing proper crotch placement of handline for rigging to bring limbs, wood up and away from utility powerlines, utilizing a pruner pole for removal of small limbs, and pulling hangers.
  • Aerial lift operator shall be TCIA skill level on Tying, Dressing, and setting of a single bowline, running bowline, bowline on a bite, clove hitch, and figure – eight knots.
  • Aerial lift operator shall be familiar with The American A300 Pruning procedures from ANSI, understands wood weight, based upon tree species, color cuts etc.
  • Aerial lift operator shall have knowledge on the fueling, the starting, and the operation of a chainsaw. The ability to sharpen a chain is required. The chainsaw is used for trimmings, small branches, limbs, wood from utility powerline corridor that are encroaching, cut wood into manageable lengths, and notch and fell trees.
  • Aerial operator shall operate a chipper: maintenance, starting, engaging the clutch, and feeding, brush through a self-feed chipper from the curb side.
  • Aerial operator shall use Three-Points of Contact when climbing in, out, up, and down on the Aerial lift.
