Job Description:
Summary
Supports the College-Wide Director, Veterans and Military Connected Services and the Veteran Center Program Managers with grant initiatives. Serves as liaison and connects participants to personal, academic, and career support services. Conducts individual and group program-engagement sessions. Collaborates with faculty, staff, and counselors to ensure optimum student support.
Essential Functions
- Provides academic, personal and career coaching to participants
- Assists in the development of educational plans and monitors student veterans’ academic progress in accordance to these plans
- Assists participants in completing financial aid and scholarship applications, as well as developing financial literacy plans
- Assists in coordination of support services
- Facilitates supplemental instruction sessions
- Serves as liaison and connects participants to personal, academic, and career support services
- Assists in writing and editing the departmental reports, newsletters and other correspondence as needed
- Engage in intrusive advising with assigned caseload of student veterans
- Monitors participants’ academic progress and refers to counseling department as needed
- Assists participants with scholarship applications, writing essays/papers, connecting to academic support, and informs participants of program offerings
- Maintains accurate and timely documentation of all necessary data
- Conducts individual and group program-engagement sessions and workshops on supportive topics, academic mindset and belonging, as well as follow-up activities.
- Ensures participants develop applicable technological and professional knowledge and skills
- Works collaboratively with the Student Counseling department to ensure deliberate and attentive participant referrals when needed
- May attend College-wide meetings, workshops, and conferences as directed
- Assists with metric tracking and report preparation
- Performs other duties as assigned
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE/TRAINING
- Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Counseling, Psychology or related field
- Minimum of two years of demonstrated experience advising, counseling, and/or teaching under-represented and prepared populations
- Demonstrated experience in a role requiring diverse problem-solving methods in a variety of situations
- Experience working with veteran or military connected community
- Possess excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills
- Possess strong organizational and time-management skills
- Ability to travel between College campuses to perform duties
- Ability to work accurately with great attention to detail
- Ability to prioritize/handle multiple tasks and work with deadlines in a dynamic environment
- Ability to promote collaboration, teamwork, and involve all stakeholders in decision-making processes
- Possess sound understanding of the needs of community college students and veteran students
- Ability to work well with faculty, administrators, staff, students, and community agencies
- Ability to enter, monitor and interpret student data accurately
- Excellent customer service skills and proven ability to develop and sustain productive customer relationships
- Ability to effectively complete work assignments independently
- Possess working knowledge of student advising concepts, practices and procedures with the ability to use in varied situations as it pertains to the departmental focus
- Demonstrated basic project management skills
- Demonstrated intermediate Banner System skills (or equivalent program)
- Demonstrated intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Word, and PowerPoint
- Demonstrated basic proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Access
- Ability to confidentially and discreetly handle subject matters requiring privacy and sensitivity
- Ability to develop and maintain relationships with key contacts to enhance work flow and quality
- Possess sensitivity to appropriately respond to the needs of a diverse population

- The work is performed in a normal, professional classroom and office environment;
