Responsibilities
- Perform gross examination and processing of tissue specimens.
- Accession specimens into the computer system following established protocols.
- Prepare tissue specimens through embedding, cutting, and staining procedures.
- Perform special stains as requested by pathologists.
- Prepare and cover-slip tissue slides.
- Assist pathologists with surgical and frozen sections.
- May serve as backup morgue assistant including assisting pathologists during autopsies, managing specimen identification and setup, performing body closure procedures, conducting cleanup operations.
- Maintain laboratory equipment and perform routine maintenance.
- Document all procedures in the Laboratory Information System.
- Follow quality control procedures and maintain proper documentation.
- Participate in quality assurance activities and maintain CAP compliance.
- Bachelor’s degree in clinical laboratory science or related field from an accredited institution.
- Current certification as a Histotechnologist (HT) through ASCP.
- Minimum of 3 years of recent experience in Histology and Cytology.
- Strong knowledge of tissue preparation and staining techniques.
- Experience with computerized laboratory information systems.
- Demonstrated knowledge of laboratory safety and infection control procedures.
- Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to pass a federal background check; US Citizenship required.
- Ability to stand/walk for extended periods.
- Ability to lift/move up to 25 pounds.
- Manual dexterity for precise tissue cutting and processing.
- Visual acuity for microscopic examinations.
