The Utilities Laborer assists the Utility Operators and Pipe Layers in a variety of duties to install underground pipe for storm drains, sewers, drains, and water mains. The Utilities Laborer must be dependable and able to follow instructions, as well as be familiar with trenching operations, undergrounds hazards, and safety procedures regarding trenching, locates, and pot holing.
Total Compensation
$18.00 to $23.00 per hour with potential for overtime
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Cleans and prepares job sites, including removal of debris, garbage, or excess water accumulation.
- Helps load and unload utilities materials.
- Operating a variety of tools and machines, including water spraying truck and equipment.
- Responsible for excavating or back-filling utility trenches using tools and shovels.
- Checks slopes as instructed for conformance to requirements using levels and lasers.
- Assists Utility Operators and Pipe Layers maneuvering pipe, manholes, and trench boxes into position.
- Assists with grade trenches or culverts.
- Performing other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Responsibility and reliability, with good attendance habits.
- General knowledge of trench and utilities site safety.
- Experience with grading trenches and operation of laser leveling systems is preferred.
- Good safety history and willingness to engage and contribute to ongoing safe work practices, including strong knowledge of excavation, trenching, and shoring safety standards.
- Ability to follow direction and be a team-player.
- Ability to effectively communicate with supervisors, team members, and client representatives.
Education and/or Experience
- Preferred: High School diploma or GED with 6 months of verifiable experience in the utilities industry.
Physical Demands
- Ability to stand or walk for extended periods of time on various terrain, including slopes and uneven ground.
- Ability to push/pull/manipulate up to 96 ft./lbs.
- Ability to push/pull/drag lifting chains/straps up to 53 ft./lbs.
- Ability to push/pull/drag equipment by assisting up to 34 ft./lbs. and team-lift 97 lbs. material, tools, and power equipment.
- Ability to lift and carry material and/or equipment up to 90 lbs., including but not limited to generators, jumping jacks, water hoses, water meters, man-hole covers, bags of cement, pipe fittings, etc.
- Ability to ascend and descend various ladders and levels of terrain.
- Ability to reach above head and at 6-inches with fine and gross motor skills.
- Ability to bend, stoop, squat, kneel, and/or crouch.
- Ability to dig/shovel various soils while performing daily duties.
Work Environment
- Outside work exposed to variant weather conditions (hot, cold, rain, snow) and muddy ground conditions.
