Title: Biostatistician
Location: Remote
The candidate will conduct studies of risk factors and trends in diabetes and related complications for the Division of Diabetes Translation (DDT) using varied data sets and data systems. This requires collaborating with a multi-disciplinary team (e.g., epidemiologists, statisticians, economists) and conducting the analysis using statistical software (e.g., SAS and SUDAAN), recommending and implementing appropriate statistical and analytic methods, and evaluating existing software for meeting the complex needs of technical and scientific studies.
Duties:
- Assemble and format analytic data sets related to risk factors and trends in the prevention and control of diabetes and its complications for use by statisticians, epidemiologists, and program staff in the Division of Diabetes Translation. Plan, construct, and maintain databases for storage, manipulation, and retrieval from network information systems; support the efforts of cross-functional teams to design and implement data systems and conduct analytic projects; and prepare statistical reports and provide technical assistance to division staff and program partners.
- Perform analytic data management, conduct statistical analyses, and prepare statistical reports using healthcare administrative data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) accessed through the CMS Virtual Research Data Center (VRDC).
- Conduct analytic data management, statistical analyses, and prepare statistical reports using programming languages, statistical software, and IT tools.
- Using advanced scientific and statistical methods, conduct research studies, and provide advice and recommendations on the conceptualization, management, and analyses of large scientific and administrative data bases.
- Develop appropriate methods for tabulating, summarizing, interpreting and presenting data from relational databases, complex surveys, and other data sets and data systems and assures timely access and utilization of diabetes data systems. This includes administrative data systems, electronic health record systems, large national data sets such the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES), National Health Interview Survey (NHIS), and Behavior Risk Factor Surveillance System; and linked data sets. Resolve problems involving complex data management and analytic activities, and develop recommendations to change system requirements to meet user needs.
Minimum Requirements:
- Knowledge of analytic data management and data science including best practices, tools, and techniques is required.
- Knowledge of statistical theory and methods and the ability to complete and interpret statistical analyses is required.
- Knowledge of statistical programming languages and statistical analysis software packages is required (SAS required; SUDAAN, Stata, R, Python desirable). Knowledge of relational databases (SQL Server, MS Access) and programming languages is required (SQL required; C /other languages desirable) Direct experience performing analytic data management and statistical analysis of administrative data (e.g., CMS data, insurance databases), electronic health information (e.g., electronic medical records and claims), or other large, complex data is required.
- Demonstrated ability to develop creative approaches to solve challenging and novel problems.
