Power Electronics Engineer – Control Systems Focus


Our client has an exciting opportunity for a Power Electronics Engineer specializing in control systems.

This role involves working on complex projects related to Naval ship platforms, including the design, development, and implementation of advanced power and control systems aboard U.S. Naval vessels. You will be involved in prototype execution, troubleshooting, installation support, and lifecycle support functions. The role also includes direct interaction with ship personnel and support staff to deliver training and ensure operational readiness.


Key Responsibilities:


System Development and Design:

  • Develop new or modify existing power and control systems, including HM&E Machinery Control Systems, for Naval, Coast Guard, Army, and Military Sealift vessels.
  • Design and document electrical and mechanical systems, including schematics and drawings.

Troubleshooting and Support:

  • Assist in diagnosing and repairing complex control systems, including their electrical and mechanical interfaces.
  • Provide onboard troubleshooting, testing, and training for shipboard personnel.
  • Develop and execute test procedures for high-voltage systems (450VAC/300VDC or higher).

Technical Analysis and Upgrades:

  • Review legacy systems and recommend upgrades to improve performance and reliability.
  • Collaborate with planning yards, shipyards, and installation teams to ensure project success.

Documentation and Diagnostics:

  • Develop and review technical documentation, including technical manuals and system equipment lists.
  • Use diagnostic tools to evaluate and improve control system performance.


Qualifications:


Must be authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship


Education: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering.


Experience:

  • At least 2 years of relevant experience, including:
  • Power Equipment Expertise: Minimum of 1 year working with 450VAC/300VDC or higher and experience with at least two of the following:
  • Transformers, Rectifiers, Solid State Relays/IGBTs
  • 50 HP motors, Induction motors
  • Switchboards, Variable Frequency Drives, Inverters, Power Monitors

Field Experience:

  • At least 6 months of installation, testing, or troubleshooting with similar equipment.

Control Systems:

  • A minimum of 1 year testing or developing control systems for power generation, transmission, distribution, or conversion.

Test Development:

  • At least 6 months creating or executing test procedures for power equipment.

Travel: Willingness to travel up to 25% annually, with trips lasting up to two weeks.

Location: Hybrid role with potential for daily physical presence in Philadelphia, PA.


Preferred Attributes:

  • Familiarity with state-of-the-art control systems, advanced diagnostic tools, and system integration for military and maritime applications.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams and interface effectively with stakeholders, including shipyards, planning yards, and installation crews.
