Role Description
We are looking for an experienced Financial Controller, or Comptroller, to undertake all aspects of financial management, including corporate accounting, taxes, regulatory and financial reporting, budget and forecasts preparation, as well as development of internal control policies and procedures. Finance Controller responsibilities will also include financial risk management. The ideal candidate will have previous experience working as a Comptroller in the technology and consulting services industry.
This is a part-time hybrid role for a Financial Controller at Cygnus. This role will be based in the Jersey City Area with flexibility for remote work.
Summary of Responsibilities:
The role is broad in nature, but typically includes the following:
- Manage all accounting operations including Billing, A/R, A/P, GL and Counsel, Cost Accounting and Revenue Recognition.
- Manage the accounting, human resources, legal and, tax aspects of the company.
- Prepare and publish timely monthly financial statements for the management team.
- Oversee the financial operations of subsidiary companies.
- Support month-end and year-end close process.
- Assist in formulating the Cygnus’s future direction through providing input on the Cygnus’s business plan, financial and tax strategies, budgeting, and forecasting. Develop performance measures that support the company’s strategic direction.
- Manage any third parties to which accounting or finance functions have been outsourced.
- Monitor cash balances and cash forecasts; arrange for debt and equity financing; invest funds Oversee the company’s payroll processing systems.
- Oversee employee benefit plans (including 401k, FSA/HRA, etc.), with particular emphasis on maximizing a cost-effective benefits package.
- Personally review and approve all federal and state tax, payroll tax related filings and documents.
- Understand and mitigate key elements of the company’s risk profile.
- Monitor any open legal issues involving the company, and legal issues affecting the industry; ensure that the company complies with all legal and regulatory requirements.
- Maintain appropriate insurance coverage.
- Develop and document business processes and accounting policies to maintain and strengthen internal controls.

Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in finance, operations, research, statistics, math, economics, or related analytical discipline preferred
- Master’s degree in accounting or business administration, or equivalent business experience
- Prior experience as a Financial Controller for a small to mid-sized company in the Consulting and Services industry, or equivalent experience.
- years of progressively responsible experience for various company or division of a large corporation, or prior experience as an advisor to or executive at an early-stage company
- Advanced Excel proficiency. 6 years of practical experience of using Excel for building and maintaining financial models
- A natural curiosity and a “big picture” mentality
- Excellent spoken and written communication and experience partnering with an executive team
- Preference will be given to candidates with an MBA in finance and the Certified Public Accountant or Certified Management Accountant designations
