Must-Have
- Early recognition of change in patient condition
- Clear communication and escalation with providers
- Critical thinking skills, CRRT, hemodynamic monitoring
- Experience with chest tubes, ventilators, various drains/surgical sites
- Busy and large Level 1 Trauma center
- Candidates need to be flexible on scheduling; self-scheduling is limited
- Every other weekend required
- EPIC experience required
- Successful candidates typically have 3 years of experience, previous travel experience, and have worked in a very busy hospital environment
- The unit has 12 beds in the SICU (6CA)
- Nurse-to-patient ratios vary from 1:2 to 1:3 depending on downgrade, acuity, or emergency admissions
- Common patient diagnoses include liver/kidney transplant, vascular surgeries, ENT for cancer, and complex abdominal surgeries
- RNs are required to titrate drips; common drips include vasopressin, epinephrine, levophed, and more
- Charge Nurse is present on each shift, with a preference for a free charge but may take full assignment depending on staffing
- Nurse aids/patient care techs are available intermittently, dependent on census, with a ratio of 1:12 when present
- Intensivist and APPs available 24/7 in the ICU
- Respiratory Therapists are in the ICU 24/7
- Self-scheduling within reason is allowed; original requests made, then team balancing, then management balanced
- 4-6 weekend shifts required every 6 weeks, depending on coverage
- May be flexed off if census is low but is not usually a problem
- First to float, then the remainder of staff; float to other ICU's within the hospital
- Dress code includes teal bottoms, black or printed coordinating scrub top; no fleece jackets or overlays
- 2 shifts of unit/department-specific orientation provided
- EPIC Systems Corporation used for charting
