Job Description
- Administer nursing care to pediatric and adult patients efficiently, safely, and courteously using proper procedures.
- Support patients and their families during the dying process.
- Perform admission assessments and subsequent assessments, completing required documentation.
- Address patients' learning abilities and needs, and develop individual care plans.
- Participate in the daily operation of the Acute Care Unit, including entering orders by computer.
- Attend required in-service, annual education, and mandatory departmental meetings.
- Engage in the collection of data for quality improvement.
- Maintain effective communication across departments, with physicians, peers, the director, and the clinical supervisor.
- Demonstrate the necessary knowledge and skills required to provide age-appropriate care to patients.
- Complete head-to-toe physical and social assessments upon patient admission.
- Develop and daily update a written care plan.
- Initiate cardiac monitoring, oxygen therapy, non-invasive blood pressure, and oximetry; evaluate IV sites and drainage systems.
- Deliver nursing care through assessment, nursing diagnosis, planning, interventions, evaluation, and updating of care plans.
- Reassess patients to identify trends requiring intervention or physician reporting.
- Assist patients, physicians, and peers in determining patient goals and care planning.
- Collaborate with Critical Care RNs for telemetry monitoring and maintain basic arrhythmia interpretation skills.
- Operate and manage equipment such as IV pumps, PCA pumps, feeding pumps, telemetry monitors, CPAP and Bi-PAP machines, defibrillators, and Doppler.
- Provide routine patient care, perform blood draws from central lines, and interpret computerized monitor trends.
- Administer medications, calculate doses, and stay updated on current medications.
- Maintain knowledge of patients' status during hospitalization, adjusting and improving recovery approaches as needed with the healthcare team.
- Utilize critical thinking for appropriate patient interventions and document medical and nursing treatments accurately and on time.
- Complete documentation necessary for patient status transitions.
- Assist physicians with patient care, procedures, and ensure orders are fulfilled.
- Follow established procedures for medication administration and narcotics control, utilizing EMAR and patient identification protocols.
- Ensure all necessary consents and records are legally complete and manage time-out procedures.
- Complete incident and error forms as appropriate.
- Educate patients and families, treating them with respect and dignity.
- Practice within established Nursing Standards of Practice, adhere to protocols, and follow healthcare provider orders.
- Holiday coverage is required.
