QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Master’s degree from a recognized, accredited college or university, with a valid Texas Certificate as a Professional School Counselor;
  2. A minimum of two (2) years of successful experience as a classroom teacher is required
  3. A minimum of three (3) years of successful experience as a counselor is preferred;
  4. Visionary leadership in public schools to work with faculties, families, and communities of the 21st century.
  5. Graduate of the Counselor Leadership Institute preferred.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Probationary/Term Contract:  High School 205 days

Salary:  $70,055 (IA-4) with an additional stipend

 

Salary Range (based on experience) as set by the Board of Trustees

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:  Coordinating Counselor - High School

  1. Assists in planning and developing the school’s education, guidance, and counseling program in relation to the needs of the students being served.
  2. Determines placement for students in courses and special programs, and updates student information and schedules to reflect such placement.
  3. Assists students in developing individual four-year high school plans.
  4. Checks students’ transcripts for correct course placement and accuracy to ensure that state and district requirements are fulfilled before graduation.
  5. Utilizes computers in job-related activities.
  6. Administers and/or supervises the administration of the standardized testing program of the district and state.
  7. Interprets results of tests to students, parents, and professional personnel.
  8. Maintains individual cumulative folders.
  9. Conducts registration conferences with parents and students new to the district for placement decisions, easing the transition, and interpreting district policies.
  10. Coordinates Advanced Placement program and administers Advanced Placement tests.
  11. Assists in the preparation of written reports or surveys that are required by the local school system and/or the Texas Education Agency.
  12. Provides individual guidance programs with an emphasis on learning appropriate behavior and aiding personal and social development.
  13. Conducts group guidance programs including orientation, educational vocational, and career planning.
  14. Counsels and serves as a resource person for parents on problems affecting the orderly educational, physical, emotional, and social growth of the student.
  15. Provides crisis counseling and/or consultant services.
  16. Conferences with students, teachers, and parents regarding failing grades and assist in finding solutions.
  17. Explains the role of counselors to appropriate agencies, the community, and to school staff members.
  18. Assists in the classroom and/or behavioral management planning with parents and school personnel.
  19. Organizes and conducts parent meetings when there is an interest or need.
  20. Plans, conducts, and/or assists with staff development programs for campus-based and district-wide personnel, when appropriate.
  21. Works closely with the school psychologist, homebound teachers, diagnostician, attendance officer, Youth Service specialist, and all ancillary personnel to help students with special problems.
  22. Works cooperatively with, and coordinates the use of, community referral sources in the prevention and/or intervention of pregnancy, drug and child abuse, school dropouts, runaways, etc.
  23. Works cooperatively with middle school counselors to ease the transition from middle school to senior high school.
  24. Attends meetings: Counselor, Administrative, Departmental, and Faculty.
  25. Conducts pre-registration of courses for the following year at each grade level.
  26. Disseminates information to students regarding summer school, correspondence, and other alternative means of education.
  27. Plans and coordinates special programs for PSAT, SAT, and ACT.
  28. Provides up-to-date information on colleges as well as scholarship and summer programs, and maintains college and career information files.  
  29. Assists students with the application process for scholarships, colleges, and alternative post-high school training, including letters of recommendation.
  30. Plans and coordinates college night activities.
  31. Provides information and application for student financial aid in college.
  32. Works with college admissions counselors in easing the transition from high school to college.
  33. Reports child abuse cases to the Children's Protective Services and involves the Youth Service Specialist when necessary.
  34. Assists the principal with organizing commencement ceremonies.
  35. Assists the principal with awards night activities.
  36. Coordinates the special education referral process and writes the referral committee report.
  37. Serves as chairperson for Individual Education Plan (IEP) meetings.
  38. Fosters team building among counselors.  Encourages their active involvement in the decision-making process.
  39. Provides two-way communication with campus principal, staff, students, parents, and community.
  40. Communicates and promotes expectations for high-level performance to counselors and students.  Recognizes excellence and achievements.
  41. Ensures the effective and quick resolution of conflicts.
  42. Identifies, analyzes, and applies research findings to promote school improvement.
  43. Assists with interviewing, selecting, and orientation of new counselors.
  44. Observes counselor performance, record observations, and contribute to the annual evaluation of counselors on campus.
  45. Supervises operations in the counseling office.
  46. Complies with district policies and state and federal laws and regulations.  Trains campus counselors and ensures their strict adherence to the policies, laws, and regulations.
  47. Displays excellent skills with the use of technology.
  48. Works with each counselor and registrar to accurately maintain each student’s cumulative folder.
  49. Demonstrates professional, ethical, and responsible behavior. Serves as a role model for all campus counselors.
  50. Demonstrates awareness of school and community needs and initiates activities to meet those needs.
  51. Uses appropriate and effective techniques to encourage community and parent involvement.
  52. Maintains emotional control under stress and frequent and irregular hours. 
  53. Carries out other guidance responsibilities as assigned by the principal and/or director of guidance.
  54. Regular and reliable attendance is an essential job function.
