POSITION DESCRIPTION

Under the supervision of the Director of Facilities, the Custodian will be responsible for a variety of cleaning and building maintenance duties required for the proper upkeep of the Wyatt Detention Center.

Please Note: This position is 40 hours per week.

  • Position Sunday- Thursday 8:00 am – 4:00 pm

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Although it is not possible to provide an exhaustive list of all types of duties, responsibilities, and performance standards, the following are the essential job functions.

  • Keeps buildings in clean and orderly condition: Performs a combination of activities including cleaning assigned areas.
  • Insures proper inventory of housekeeping supplies is maintained.
  • Participate in required training, seminars, and assemblies.
  • Utilize all personal protective equipment trained on and issued for safety.
  • Washes interior surfaces of buildings such as walls, ceilings, windows, etc. using appropriate supplies and equipment.
  • Performs related duties such as loading and unloading equipment and supplies from vehicles, moving furniture in rooms for special functions or meetings.
  • Performs outside duties such as washing windows, sweeping walks, snow removal, landscaping as needed, picking up trash and picking up leaves in the fall.
  • Performs related duties as required.
  • Utilizes advanced custodial equipment such as automatic cleaning equipment, snow blowers, and lawn mowers.
  • Complete knowledge of cleaning chemicals, surface types, industrial cleaning methods, etc.
  • Responsible for keeping the floors cleaned and waxed
  • Vacuum and shampoo carpets
  • Proper removal of trash throughout the facilities
  • Touch up paint as needed throughout the facility
  • Assist other facility maintenance staff when required.
  • Clean and stock all restrooms within the building; toilets, sinks, floors, etc.
  • Clean spills, leaks, and other sanitary issues
  • Stock and maintain supply rooms
  • Notify supervisors of unsafe conditions while performing duties or inspecting the premises
  • Operate cleaning equipment such as vacuums, polishers, scrubbers, and other equipment
  • Move furniture (tables, chairs, desks, etc.) when needed for events, trainings, and meetings
  • Maintain outdoor grounds by picking up trash, emptying outdoor garbage cans, etc.
  • Complete tasks in a timely manner with minimal supervision
  • Be available for certain overtime situations, such as after hour events such as snow removal and stripping and waxing floors.
  • Maintain schedules for cleaning areas of the building
  • Maintain records/logs on daily work.
  • Must be able to perform under general supervision.
  • Must be task oriented and require little supervision when performing tasks.
  • Must be able to lift 35 pounds without assistance.
  • Must be able to operate a motor vehicle and standard custodial equipment.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.
  • Must have general knowledge and skills pertaining to commercial custodial and or housekeeping.
  • Understands and carry out oral and written directions
  • Possess the abilities to follow directions, to take criticism, to get along with coworkers and supervisors, to treat coworkers, supervisors and customers with respect and courtesy, and to refrain from abusive, in-subordinate or violent behavior.
  • Must follow and maintain a working knowledge of all applicable regulations, directives, standards, Operating Instructions and Policies
  • Participate in required training, seminars and assemblies.
  • Floor Cleaning Care:
  • Sweep, mop, and vacuum floors regularly to maintain cleanliness and safety.
  • Strip, wax, and polish floors as necessary to maintain their shine and durability
  • Identify and address any floor maintenance issues, such as stains, scratches, or damaged surfaces.
  • Ensure appropriate use of cleaning products and equipment to protect floors and comply with safety guidelines.

A: QUALIFICATIONS

Working skills in:

One to three years’ experience in basic custodial / janitorial duties.

  • Knowledge of stripping and waxing floors.
  • Ability to perform physical labor and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Knowledge of methods followed in building custodial work.
  • Knowledge of types and uses of materials, tools, and equipment used in building custodial work.

A criminal background check will be completed on the recommended candidate prior to the candidate being hired.

Education, licensure, and certifications will be verified by the Human Resources Department's Hiring Guidelines.

E: Minimum Entrance Requirements:
Applicants must have at least (A) two years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.

Substitutions:
A diploma or certificate from a recognized trade, technical or vocational school, at high school level or higher.

This position reports to the Director of Facilities and Procurement.

Donald W. Wyatt Detention Facility policies and practices, the Collective Bargaining Unit Agreement, and Federal, State, and local laws primarily convey guidelines.
