As a Lead Optometrist Technician, this individual is responsible for monitoring Optometrist schedules, serving as a resource to Technicians and Scribes scheduled in the Optometry area, monitoring and maintaining the patient flow, disseminating information to team members as appropriate, and communicating with department leads for alignment on processes and protocols.
Additionally, this individual is responsible for performing Technician data collection functions, as delegated by the provider, to allow for proper professional diagnosis of patients’ conditions.
Job Responsibilities
• Team Lead
o Monitors the Optometrists schedules, ensuring appointments are scheduled appropriately based on scheduling protocols
o Manages patient add-ons for the Optometrists and communicates add-ons to the provider and the team as necessary
o Maintains a smooth flow of patients to the provider, altering the test sequence as required
o Communicates with reception and other departments as necessary to facilitate proper patient flow
o Communicates with other provider leads to ensure alignment on processes and protocols
o Coaches, encourages, and guides staff to obtain the best patient care. Serves as a role model for technicians, by portraying work habits and teamwork for the team to follow.
o Maintains excellent communication with the providers and departmental leadership on all activities, problems, and opportunities
o Performs other duties as required
• Communication and Patient Care
o Acquaints new patients with office procedures to which they will be exposed
o Informs patients of purpose of tests the technician is performing, and how the patient will be affected during the tests
o Obtains patient history to include chief complaint, history of present illness, past history (ocular and general), family history (ocular and general), and history of allergies and medications
o Performs accurate and consistent documentation and measurement tasks based on physician requirements
o Provides fundus, exterior and anterior segment photographs, including FA’s.
o A-scans (all methods) and Manual Keratometry
o Assists physicians with injections, maintaining sterile technique
o Assists physician with minor surgery, maintaining practice standards of sterile technique and infection control
o Assists physician with laser procedures
o Monitors patient flow, ensuring the physician exam rooms are always full
o Other tasks specific to the physician’s needs
o Travels to satellite clinics as needed
• Instrument Maintenance
o Troubleshoots instruments as necessary
o Replaces bulbs
o Checks connections
o Performs archiving functions according to manufacturer recommendations
o Performs maintenance of instrument sterility
Qualifications
Education and Experience
o High school diploma or equivalent is required
o College coursework in a related healthcare field is preferred
o A minimum of two years’ experience as an ophthalmic technician
Essential Skills and Abilities
o Demonstrated, advanced comprehension of the ophthalmic assistant skills as outlined by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO).
o Understanding of optics and the ability to perform refractometry
o Strong communication and interpersonal skills
o Empathetic personality with concern for patients’ needs
o Strong organization with attention to detail
o Ability to work in a team and be a positive team member
o Demonstrated ability to perform comprehensive work ups on three patients per hour
o Demonstrated computer literacy
Physical Abilities
o Ability to walk and stand for eight hours.
o Ability to type or write legibly in a dimly-lit setting
o Ability to hear softly spoken words.
o Ability to assist wheelchair-bound patients

Work Schedule
Monday - Friday with rotating Saturdays from 8 AM to Noon
This position is considered a full time position, approximately 40 hours per week.
