BUS DRIVER - JOB DESCRIPTION
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Completion of eighth grade.
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Five (5) years licensed driving experience.
- Valid Alabama Commercial Driver’s License, Class B, with passenger endorsement.
- Verification of an acceptable driving record through the Department of Motor Vehicles.
- Successful completion of a bus driver training course that meets state and federal standards.
- Must pass drug and alcohol screening as required by federal, state and local laws and policies.
- Must meet background clearance requirements as specified by Alabama statutes and State Board of Education regulations.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Ability to follow a daily routing schedule. Knowledge of highway and traffic safety rules and procedures. Ability to operate light and/or heavy-duty buses in a safe and economical way. Ability to obtain cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification if required. Ability to utilize appropriate disciplinary techniques. Ability to tolerate highly stressful situations. Ability to understand and follow written and oral directions. Ability to communicate orally and in writing. Ability to handle sensitive information in a confidential manner. Ability to work independently and make decisions with minimum supervision. Ability to work cooperatively with others.

JOB GOAL
To transport students in a safe, efficient and timely manner.
SUPERVISES:
N/A
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Transport students to and from school and on assigned trips safely and efficiently.
- Transport only authorized students.
- Follow assigned route and schedule.
- Discharge students only at authorized stops.
- Maintain discipline of students and report discipline problems to school administrators.
- Recommend to supervisor changes in bus routes or bus loads.
- Keep assigned bus clean according to system transportation policies.
- Fuel bus according to system transportation guidelines and policies.
- Follow all transportation policies and procedures.
- Comply with all federal, state and local laws related to bus transportation.
- Ensure no smoking, drinking or eating on the bus.
- Instruct students in safety precautions and practices.
- Complete pre- and post-trip safety inspections and notify proper authority of mechanical defects and lateness.
- Conduct bus evacuation drills as required.
- Demonstrate initiative in the performance of assigned responsibilities.
- Meet and deal effectively with the general public, staff members, parents, administrators and other contact persons using tact and good judgment.
- Follow attendance, punctuality and appropriate dress rules.
- Ensure adherence to good safety standards.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding school/workplace matters.
- Model and maintain high ethical standards.
- Maintain expertise in assigned area to fulfill position goals and objectives.

- Essential Performance Responsibilities
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 10 pounds of force as needed to move objects.
May be required to restrain a physically active individual as a temporary safety measure.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Salary and benefits shall be paid consistent with the system’s approved compensation plan.
Length of the work year and hours of employment shall be those established by the system.
