Position Summary
To Provide Impactful Supplemental In-Class Support : Dallas College students will serve as additional classroom educators in our elementary schools to help mitigate learning loss experienced acutely over the past couple of years as a result of disruptions to the learning environment brought on by the evolving COVID-19 pandemic. Dallas College students will work with elementary students in small groups and one-on-one settings to build relationships and foster a sense of belonging with our young learners while they are addressing students' academic gaps in reading and math.
To Prepare a Ready Workforce of Teachers for our City's Future : In order to increase the Dallas College undergraduates' readiness to enter the workforce as full-time educators in Dallas ISD schools, United to Learn and Dallas ISD will work closely with these future teachers through training, field observations, and coaching. Recognizing that classroom field work is vital to a teacher's success in their first-year teaching, these aspiring teachers will benefit from their hands-on responsibilities in leading small groups and supporting whole class instruction.
This description outlines the job description for undergraduates tutoring at United to Learn elementary schools through Federal Work Study.
Under general supervision, tutors will provide specific and focused academic assistance to individual students or small groups of students working on individual prescribed learner objectives and / or class assignments.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Exhibits knowledge / skills in specific academic area(s) to be tutored.
- Ability to coach students through course materials and explain concepts in a manner that students understand.
- Able to assess students' progress throughout tutoring sessions.
- Ability to build and maintain collaborative relationships with students, staff, and faculty regarding tutor assignment.
- In a dynamic, constantly changing environment, must be flexible and able to adapt to change.
- Must demonstrate strong organizational and time management skills.
- Must be punctual, begin all sessions promptly, use time for academic tasks, and focus on the student's needs.
- Good interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills are required to deal effectively with individuals within the Dallas College community network.
- Able to provide excellent customer service.
