ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

- Collaborates with Education Coordinator on education strategies
- Provides staffing depth by assisting with patient care as needed in the Medical/ Surgical unit and the Emergency Department.
- Demonstrates ability to consistently meet the department work schedule.
- Responsible for the daily operations of the Med/Surg unit and the Emergency Department, ensuring adequate staffing for the upcoming week. Responsible for staffing and triaging staff to support other departments depending on patient volume and needs. Assumes overall accountability for maintaining safe, high-quality, cost-effective services consistent with the needs of the organization within the Hospital’s budgetary guidelines.
a. Utilizes the nursing process, and effective written and verbal communication skills in accordance with established professional nursing standards and Hospital policies and practices.
b. Provides professional nursing care and oversees care being provided to patients in all areas of responsibility. Uses professional judgment in assessing patient conditions and recognizes and determines proper action for medical emergencies, i.e., calls physician or takes pre-planned emergency measures.
c. Documents care provided and patient response in an accurate and timely manner in accordance with legal requirements, professional nursing standards, and Hospital policies. Communicates with the physician regarding patient progress, and reactions to treatments. Relates effectively with other shifts.
d. Maintains awareness of own safety in performing duties and responsibilities. Adheres to universal precautions and infection control policies and procedures.
- Assists with development of policies/procedures for all areas of responsibility.
- Will assist with chart audits and data collection as assigned by the Nursing Services Director.
- Represents Dallas County Hospital in a professional manner. Promotes positive interpersonal relations and serves as a role model within the department and with all Hospital personnel. Responds to all customer requests in a courteous, professional manner. Interacts in a competent, professional manner with outside vendors and the community.
- Assists with and/or facilitates Huddles.
- Assists with rounding, coaching, and mentoring on all nursing services staff
- Assists with timecards as directed
- Assists with nursing services performance reviews
- Attend leadership meetings and LDIs
- Carries and answers the charge nurse phone when working
- Assists with new hire department orientation and scheduling, preceptor assignment, completion of checklist, documentation of competency.
- Provides “at the elbow,” real-time education for staff, assists with implementation of new processes and process changes
- Assists with the orientation of staff to other departments within organization
- Responsible to ensure adequate training of charge nurses

Additional Duties and Responsibilities

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Education/Experience:
Graduate of an approved registered nursing program. Two years hospital experience.
Current licensure as a registered nurse by the Iowa Board of Nursing.
Leadership experience preferred or previously functioned in the charge role.
Technical Skills:
Ability to operate essential equipment and perform essential procedures in nursing department. Demonstrates knowledge, abilities and skills required to perform a wide variety of nursing functions. Mathematical ability necessary to compute drug dosages accurately. Annual completion of unit specific competencies.
Other Qualifications/Certificate/License:
RN licensure from the State of Iowa, BCLS, Completion of Dependent Adult/Child Abuse. Must be willing to obtain ACLS, PALS, NRP, and TNCC certifications. Understands, articulates, and ensures compliance with the State Nurse Practice Act, regulatory standards, and policies of the organization.

The incumbent must have the ability to access, manipulate, organize, and relay information in meaningful ways using email, word processing and spreadsheets.
