What are the responsibilities and job description for the Correctional Officer position at Dallas County?
This position is responsible for the protection, welfare, safety, custody and control of inmates incarcerated in the Dallas County Jail. Duties shall include, but are not limited to: booking of prisoners, data entry, overseeing the general health and welfare of prisoners, feeding of prisoners, general cleaning and maintenance of the jail facility, record keeping, attending prisoners summoned to court, and any other duties as pertains to the orderly operation of the Dallas County Jail.

- Monitor and operate radios, telephones, computer systems, and facility audio and visual monitors.
- Keep timely, accurate, comprehensive reports, files and forms.
- Carry out effectively and efficiently, the policies and procedures from supervisory personnel and the department.
- Process intake and release of inmates.
- Assist in maintaining surveillance of corridors, cells, and adjacent areas, while remaining alert for escapes or suicide attempts, and attempts to pass or produce items of contraband.
- Shall perform personal searches outlined in the policies and procedures.
- Participate in emergency operations involving fire, tornado, escape, riot, and hostage situations.
- Performs related duties.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- One to two years experience in law enforcement or related work.
- Possession of or ability to obtain certification by the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy. Must maintain firearms qualifications annually.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES
- Work independently and exercise discretion and use independent judgment in complex situations.
- Knowledge of security procedures and techniques; departmental rules, regulations, policies and procedures; intervention techniques, vehicle maintenance standards.
- Ability to react with good judgment in emergency situations and interpret rules and regulations.
- Knowledge of jail medical and emergency protocols.
- Knowledge of inmate rights.
- Knowledge of video and audio surveillance equipment operations principles.
- Knowledge of Federal Laws and Regulations, Iowa Criminal laws, and Iowa Administrative Code.
- Skill in problem solving.
- Skill in prioritizing and planning.
- Skill in interpersonal relations.
- Skill in operating computers and job-related software programs.
- Skill in oral and written communication.
- Will report on time, will be neat in appearance, in a clean, wrinkle free uniform as issued.
- The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects and utilizes the sense of smell.
- The work is typically performed in a jail facility. The employee may be exposed to contagious or infectious diseases or irritating chemicals. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.
