Job Purpose:
A key member of the finance team that will ensure accurate processing of the school district accounting and financial transactions, maintains compliance with fund accounting principles, and provides timely and precise financial reporting contributing to the overall financial integrity of the school district.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Maintains an accurate, timely and comprehensive record of all the district’s accounting activity.
- Request, receive, and record district revenue and reimbursements monthly or as needed from grants or other funding sources.
- Enter cash receipts, invoice vouchers for payment, and journal entries in accounting software with appropriate documentation and approval for audit records.
- Reconcile bank accounts monthly and record appropriate transactions.
- Review and reconcile balance sheet accounts including receivables, payables, and interfund accounts periodically for accuracy and record appropriate transactions as needed.
- Analyze budget versus actual revenues and expenditures and make appropriate budget amendments or journal entries as needed on a timely basis.
- Transfer cash between designated checking and investment bank accounts to maximize interest earnings and properly fund expenditures.
- Maintain a complete, comprehensive and accurate record of fixed assets.
- Assist grant administrators in tracking expenditures, ensuring compliance
- Provide electronic reports, physical documentation, and respond to inquiries throughout the annual audit process as well as other grant or program audits.
- Prepare and submit state and federal reports such as Salary & Travel, Financial and Budgets, Grants Accounting, Audits, and Capital.
- Serve as internal auditor for the finance office, central departments and school-based staff conducting periodic reviews of documentation and processes to ensure compliance with policies, regulations and best practices.
- Ability to train and mentor staff by providing on-going support and guidance regarding accounting and financial procedures and best practices.
- Provide formal and informal training to school secretaries and administration regarding school activity accounting, and general or special fund financial processes and procedures.
- Maintain user security access and functionality in the accounting software and online banking.
- Execute all other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or business.
- 2-4 years of experience in accounting or finance roles.
- Knowledge of modified accrual accounting, fund accounting principles, GASB (Governmental Accounting Standards Board) requirements, and relevant federal and state regulations.
- Robust technology skills in a variety of pertinent software applications, including Microsoft Excel.
- Experience preferred, with school district accounting and the State of Georgia chart of accounts for accurate financial categorization and classification of revenues, expenditures, and balance sheet items.
- Steadfast work ethic with a high degree of professionalism and is a team player.
- Ability to deal sensitively with confidential material.
- Clear interpersonal (verbal and written) communication skills demonstrated by the ability to communicate with various levels inside and outside the organization.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills as well as organizing and prioritizing skills.
Work Calendar:
This position works 225 days. Reports to the Chief Financial Officer.
