Job purpose:
This position works with school, district, and community personnel in identifying and helping children overcome social or emotional obstacles which may prevent them from thriving in the academic environment.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Works with school personnel, families, and children in identifying, developing, and implementing intervention strategies to address personality, behavioral, academic, health, economic, attendance, or family issues
- Works with school personnel in identifying at-risk students and encourages intervention and guidance for those identified
- Participates ongoing collaboration with other community agencies to assist students and their families with identified problems
- Recommends and/or establishes programs of a preventative nature, for staff, students, and parents (Drug awareness, child abuse, truancy, etc.)
- Seeks to foster school-home relationships (Making home visits and other contacts with parents as appropriate, mediating differences, advocating for students, seeking relevant family information, etc.)
- Maintains confidentiality of student and family information
- Consults with school and agency personnel to mobilize resources to address the specialized needs of students
- When necessary, social workers will transport students and families to help them meet their academic, medical, emotional or financial needs.
- Demonstrates professional and ethical practices consistent with school and system policies in working with students, parents, colleagues, student records and documentation in all work-related activities
- Communicates effectively with all individuals and groups
- Actively communicates with school counselor to address all student and family concerns that may arise including attendance, hygiene, physical and mental health, etc
- Promotes a positive school environment that enhances student learning
- Works cooperatively with colleagues and the community
- Seeks to improve through professional development and evaluation activities
- Participates in activities beyond the regular school day to enhance the overall school program
- Acts, when necessary, as the custodian of school system records, including but not limited to system-wide attendance records and shall have the authority to enter, maintain and access attendance records for all students within Dalton Public Schools
- Follows all county, state and federal policies and procedures
- Performs other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in Social Work and/or an S-5 certificate in School Social Work.
- Knowledge and understanding of human behavior and cultural differences; ability to relate to children and adults; knowledge of the work of community agencies; skill in interviewing and conducting consultative or counseling conference.

This position works a 190-day calendar.
