POSITION SUMMARY:
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, supervising personnel and coordinating the operational activities of a specific nursing unit. Decision-making is based on patient acuity, staff skill mix, and unit census for a 12-hour work shift. The role involves directing clinical nursing care for patients on the assigned unit while demonstrating effective leadership skills. The individual in this position must lead and collaborate with the nursing care team to ensure the delivery of quality nursing care in a safe environment.
The role requires responding to nursing personnel requests for patient care assistance and intervening as an expert clinician when necessary to ensure positive patient outcomes and experiences. Board rounds must be conducted for each patient to address patient and family needs. The position also involves managing the performance of unit personnel. Under the direction of the Department Director and Hospital Supervisor, the individual provides both administrative and clinical support to maintain high-quality patient care and assists with financial management of the unit.
The role requires maintaining clinical competencies relevant to the unit and providing direct patient care when necessary. The individual must be able to perform tasks in all patient care and operational areas with reasonable accommodations and utilize all mandatory safety devices and procedures. Participation in the Respiratory Protection Program may be required, which could involve wearing a respirator. This is a non-union position.
Education:
- Education required to qualify for licensure as a Registered Nurse.
- Bachelor's Degree in Nursing or an allied health field preferred. If not possessed, the candidate must initiate coursework toward the degree within one year of hire or transfer and complete it within five years. Current staff in this position must enroll in coursework for a Bachelor's degree within one year and obtain it within five years of signing this job description.
Experience:
- One year of experience in a charge/relief charge position preferred.
- Minimum of two years of relevant clinical experience in an acute care facility.
Licenses/Certificates:
- Current California Registered Nurse (RN) License.
- Current BLS Certification through AHA.
- National certification in a specialty area preferred; required within three years of hire or transfer. Current staff in this position must obtain certification within three years of signing this job description.
