POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the Phlebotomy Supervisor, performs phlebotomy procedures with venous and capillary samples, performs EKG's and delivers to the proper work area for all patient types. Must be able to perform jobs in all patient care and operational areas subject to reasonable accommodations, also be able to employ all mandatory safety devices and procedures. Must participate in the Respiratory Protection Program, which may include the wearing of a respirator. This is a union position.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Education required qualifying for certification as a Certified Phlebotomy Technician.
Experience: Minimum of one year as a Certified Phlebotomy Technician in a hospital setting preferred. Computer experience required.
Licenses/Certificates: Phlebotomy license issued by the California Department of Public Health Laboratory Field Services.
Current BLS Certification required.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
1. Knowledgeable of all functions of OC, NOVIUS, and CareFusion SCV, with ability to order, receive, verify, look up results, print lists and labels and make additions or deletions to accession numbers. Completes data entry with 80% accuracy.
2. Maintains a clean and orderly work area and a neat well-stocked phlebotomy cart, making sure that the test materials are available and properly prepared for subsequent phlebotomists on the next shift.
3. Drawing of patient demonstrating knowledge and skill necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patient served. Obtains blood specimens by venipuncture and capillary methods for various types of testing, utilizing draw techniques approved by NCCLS and observing safety and infection control procedures.
4. Adheres to rigid accuracy in using names and numbers for identifying patients and specimens. Labels samples accurately and completely to meet defines laboratory standards.
5. Performs duties in a self directed manner with minimal supervision or direction. Ensures that routine and priority tasks are completed within prescribed time frames.
6. Maintains departmental competency. Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs.
7. Receives, labels and stores supplies. Verifies shipping documents with orders to ensure correct items/quantities were received.
8. Willingly performs filing and report printing, and delivery of reports to various departments in the hospital. Ability to fax on request and take phone messages accurately.
