Position overview:
Assistant will be responsible for assisting veterinary staff in monitoring patients, administrative tasks such as patient record keeping, maintain sanitary conditions in exam rooms, operating room, surgical instruments and laundry. Care and compassion for animals and communicate with owners as needed.
Responsibilities and Duties:
- Care for animals- feeding, cleaning, observe behavior etc.
- Assist in holding and restraining animals during exams and surgical prep procedures
- Clean and sterilize instruments, equipment and tools
- Ensure stocking of exam room and treatment area
- Change soiled bedding and kennel materials
- Ensure all cages are clean
- Cage cards are labeled with proper patient information
- Administer medications
- Assist Technician and Dr in collecting samples such as blood or urine for testing
- Communicate with owners and families on surgery and recovery instructions
- Administrative duties such as updating files
- Assist receptionist with client/patient checking in and checking out of clinic
- If there is a delay, keep clients informed of expected waiting time.
- Effectively communicate and educate clients on general animal husbandry and answer basic questions
- Keep records up to date in Shelterluv. Medical history, etc.
- Assist Technicians to prep animals for aseptic surgery
- Understand aseptic technique in the surgery room to maintain sterile conditions
- Maintain and sterilize surgical instruments and packs
- Create prescription labels, fill prescriptions and dispense medications as directed by the Dr.
- Take care of patients post-surgical (extubation, check vital signs TPR if necessary)
- Daily cleaning of clinic
Required Skills
- Be able to multitask
- Experience restraining dogs and cats
- Able to work with different personalities
- Have knowledge in cat and dog body language
- Attention to detail and problem-solving skills
- Be able to handle stressful environment involving animals, fosters and clients
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills (Bi-Lingual plus)
- Strong organizational and planning skills
Qualifications
- Veterinary experience of 1-2 yrs
- Able to lift 50lbs
- High school diploma or equivalent; college degree a plus
- Proficient in MS Office
Reporting Structure:
- Reports directly to Clinic Manager
