Dane County Regional Airport has a full-time (1.0 FTE) vacancy for Airport Maintenance Mechanic position

This is a second shift position.  Normal work schedule: 1:30 pm to 12:00 am, rotating, including weekends and holidays.

Undesirable Hours Premium Pay:  Employees assigned to this classification at the Airport also receive undesirable hours pay of $3.00 for any time worked between 6:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m., and for any time on Saturday and/or Sunday.


 The eligible list created from this posting may be used for future Airport Maintenance Mechanic vacancies for the next six (6) months.

DEFINITION

Under general direction, performs skilled maintenance and repair work on airport building, facilities, mechanical utilities and equipment. Performs related work as required.

 EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Performs skilled work in the maintenance or repair of airport terminal HVAC and mechanical systems, plumbing, buildings and electrical installations, including gas, diesel and electric motors, heat exchangers, variable air volume (VAV) systems, gas forced air furnaces and equipment, circulating pumps, boiler alarm systems, electrical systems, variable frequency drives, emergency generators and generator electrical panels, plumbing systems, compressors, welding equipment, refrigeration and cooling systems, water softening equipment, automated revenue control and parking lot ticket dispensers and gate units, building automation and computerized HVAC systems, automatic door operators and locks, baggage conveyor systems, passenger boarding bridges, flight information display systems, and other mechanical equipment and structures. Operates light and heavy motorized equipment as necessary. May act as a crew leader for a small group of temporarily assigned helpers.

Education, Training and Experience:

Any combination of education, training and experience equivalent to High School graduation and five (5) years of experience in the construction or maintenance of large commercial HVAC and mechanical systems and building automation systems.  


Licenses/Certificates: 

Must have or be able to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class “A” with “N” endorsement required within six (6) months of the appointment. 

 Everyone who has a commercial driver’s license (“CDL”) must be registered in the US Department of Transportation’s Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse.  Registration is available at https://clearinghouse.fmcsa.dot.gov/register.  


Special Requirements:

Must have a valid driver’s license and access to reliable personal transportation, or equivalent. Must be available nights, holidays and weekends, and during snow and other emergencies. Random drug and alcohol testing required. Applicants must pass drug/alcohol testing after a conditional offer of employment has been made. Candidates who reach the final selection stage will be subject to an FBI criminal history records check, TSA security assessment, employment history verification, and a driving record check.


Background Check Statement: Some positions may require a criminal background check which can include fingerprinting due to the nature of the job's responsibilities. Wisconsin's Fair Employment Law, s. 111.31 – 111.395, Wis. Stats., prohibits discrimination because of an arrest or conviction record. However, Dane County may disqualify an applicant if the position's responsibilities are substantially related to the applicant's criminal history (e.g., the nature of the crime and its relationship to the position, whether hiring, transferring or promoting an applicant would pose an unreasonable risk to the business, its employees, customers and vendors, etc.). Management reserves the right to make employment contingent upon successful completion of the background check.


For Bilingual Positions:

  1. Provide services in both English and the required foreign language (e.g., Spanish, Arabic, Hmong, etc.). 
  2. Applicants being considered for bilingual positions will be tested during the recruitment process prior to employment. This will primarily consist of passing an oral language proficiency assessment from English to foreign language and foreign language to English, but may require additional language testing, such as written translation, if it is an essential function of the job. 

*If applicable, individuals may confirm with the Employee Relations Division whether results of bilingual language certifications/ examinations they currently hold qualify them for the position’s bilingual designation.


 Physical and Environmental Work Requirements:

On a daily basis, exposure to temperature variations or extremes; chemicals; odors; noise; vibrations; wetness; machinery and/or dust that may cause discomfort but poses little risk of injury. Must be able to lift 50 pounds unassisted and heavier loads with assistance. This position is active for the entire shift (standing, walking, stooping, twisting, lifting, bending, pushing, reaching, climbing, crouching and crawling). May be required to operate heavy equipment, move furniture and work from safety ladders. Ability to use hand/feet for repetitive single grasping, fine manipulations, pushing and pulling and operating controls and equipment. Must be able to see and hear within normal ranges with or without assistive devices.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of the methods, practices, tools and materials used in varied large commercial building HVAC, mechanical and electrical system maintenance and repair work. Knowledge of the construction and operation of a variety of large building HVAC, mechanical and electrical equipment. Knowledge of computers, building automation and control systems. Knowledge of large commercial boiler, chiller and thermal storage systems. Knowledge of aircraft passenger boarding bridges. Knowledge of conveyor systems. Knowledge of occupational hazards and of necessary safety precautions. Knowledge of electrical systems and emergency generators.  Knowledge of applicable code provisions, operating regulations and rules. Skill in the use of standard tools and diagnostic equipment used in building, electrical and mechanical repair and maintenance work. Ability to train, lead and monitor the work of semi-skilled and unskilled workers. Ability to keep records and make reports. Ability to operate light and heavy equipment. Ability to work independently with limited direction.  Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Ability to read and comprehend technical drawings and schematics, including logic and ladder diagrams. Ability to work cooperatively with others.
