DEFINITION
Under general direction in the District Attorney's Deferred Prosecution Unit, this classification provides direct services to offenders participating in deferred prosecution. Deferred Prosecution Case Managers promote self-determination, community belonging, valued social roles, and opportunities for contribution and choice while seeking to ensure health and community safety.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
This section lists several duties, but not all Deferred Prosecution Case Managers perform all the duties that are listed, nor do they work in all crime categories. Duties and specialization are dependent upon work assignments.
Education, Training, and Experience:
Individuals must possess a Bachelor’s Degree in social work, human services, criminal justice, psychology, or a closely related field. Individuals with a Bachelor’s Degree must also possess at least two (2) years of professional experience working with any of the following: Criminal offenders’ rehabilitation work; Ex-offender client population in the criminal justice system; Restorative justice practices (the restorative justice practice can be in the following areas: criminal justice system, community-based program, educational system, or any agencies utilizing restorative justice practice/principles). OR: Individuals with a Master’s Degree in social work, human services, criminal justice, psychology, or a closely related field must also possess at least six (6) months of professional experience working with any of the following: Criminal offenders’ rehabilitation work; Ex-offender client population in the criminal justice system; Restorative justice practices (the restorative justice practice can be in the following areas: criminal justice system, community-based program, educational system, or any agencies utilizing restorative justice practice/principles).
Special Requirements:
Must have a valid driver’s license or access to reliable personal transportation or equivalent.
For Bilingual Positions:
- Provide services in both English and the required foreign language (e.g., Spanish, Arabic, Hmong, etc.).
- Applicants being considered for bilingual positions will be tested during the recruitment process prior to employment. This will primarily consist of passing an oral language proficiency assessment from English to foreign language and foreign language to English, but may require additional language testing, such as written translation, if it is an essential function of the job.
*If applicable, individuals may confirm with the Employee Relations Division whether results of bilingual language certifications/examinations they currently hold qualify them for the position’s bilingual designation.
Background Check Statement: Some positions may require a criminal background check which can include fingerprinting due to the nature of the job’s responsibilities. Wisconsin’s Fair Employment Law, s. 111.31 – 111.395, Wis. Stats., prohibits discrimination because of an arrest or conviction record. However, Dane County may disqualify an applicant if the position’s responsibilities are substantially related to the applicant’s criminal history (e.g., the nature of the crime and its relationship to the position, whether hiring, transferring or promoting an applicant would pose an unreasonable risk to the business, its employees, customers and vendors, etc.). Management reserves the right to make employment contingent upon successful completion of the background check.

Ability to work in an environment in which you are asked to balance holding offenders accountable with addressing their needs as well as the victims’ needs and community safety. The environment is a highly collaborative, high energy and fast-paced law office employing approximately 125 professional employees.Knowledge and skills in counseling techniques, interviewing and assessment. Understanding of human growth and behavior. Knowledge of socio-economic problems and the way these problems affect individuals and families. Knowledge of the criminal justice system. Good working knowledge of community health and welfare resources including how to utilize these resources for perpetrators and victims involved in sensitive crimes. Knowledge of complex factors involved in domestic violence. Knowledge of financial aspects relating to access to treatment, including insurance driven market and wait-lists and level of care affecting treatment outcomes. Ability to perform duties in a multidisciplinary environment with trauma-informed approaches and respect for cultural diversity without bias, prejudice, or intolerance. Ability to organize work to most effectively achieve program objectives. Ability to balance holding offenders accountable with addressing their needs, the victims’ needs, and community safety. Ability to triage a high caseload and endure sensitive, tragic and sometimes violent and graphic case details. Possess good written and oral communication skills. Ability to collect data and maintain accurate case records.Salary : $37 - $43
