The Dane County Land and Water Resources Department has openings for the LTE Lake Management Dredge Deckhand position in Madison, WI.


Limited Term Employees (LTEs) are limited to 1,200 hours in a payroll year and are not guaranteed any hours per week.


Mandatory training will be required for all LTE employees.  Training will be offered on two dates:  May 19, 2025 and June 9, 2025.  All hired LTE employees will be required to attend one training date.  If employee does not attend, they will be terminated.

DEFINITION AND EXAMPLES OF DUTIES 

Operate pusher barge during dredging operations.  Communicate with dredge operator and boat operators to coordinate dredge movements. Renew anchor and buoy lines. Secure mooring lines to vessels. Assist in monitoring the condition of wire cables, winches, pulleys, blocks, pipeline and mooring fixtures. Couple and align sections of dredge pipelines to assure efficient discharge. Set anchors to secure float lines. Assist in performing maintenance. Assist with washing and maintaining boats and equipment in proper working order. Keep work areas clean and organized. Work as a team and fulfill other duties and tasks as assigned to assist dredge operations.

Education, Training and Experience

Must be eighteen (18) years of age or older.  

 

Certifications/Licenses

Must possess a Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Boater Safety Certificate prior to the first day of employment.  Must have a valid driver’s license. 


Background Check Statement: Some positions may require a criminal background check which can include fingerprinting due to the nature of the job’s responsibilities. Physical and Environmental Work Requirements

Must be able to lift 75 pounds, bend and climb. Work on uneven surfaces and aboard watercraft, including bending and climbing. Must have the ability to use hands/feet for repetitive single grasping, fine manipulation, pushing and pulling and operating controls and equipment. Able to sit for long periods of time (3 hours) while operating watercraft.  Work daily on the water in outdoors environment including heat, cold and inclement weather.  

Ability to work well in teams and follow directions. Knowledgeable of boater safety. Must be safety conscious at all times regarding the safety of self and the safety of others. Must be able to work around others and with other employees as a team member. Must be able to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with members of the public, county employees and elected officials. Ability to hear and see within normal ranges. Ability to make independent decisions, to follow instructions, to accept constructive criticism. Ability to accept responsibility and work with minimal supervision as assigned.
