The Dane County Land & Water Resources Department has a current opening for an LTE Land & Water Field Assistant. 

Limited Term Employees (LTE) are limited to 1,200 hours in a payroll year and are not guaranteed any hours per week.COMMITMENT TO EQUITY AND INCLUSION

DEFINITION
Under general supervision, provide in-field collection of environmental samples and perform office related duties. Conduct sample preparation, data entry, and general data analysis. Work with internal and external partners. Complete assigned tasks supporting Department projects and initiatives.  
 
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Perform the collection of environmental samples according to established methodologies. Complete field investigation reports, lab sample sheets, and chain of custody forms. Perform sample preparation and processing protocols prior to submitting samples to a laboratory. Deliver samples to laboratories for analysis. Assist in coordinating access to sampling locations. Collect and organize lab results. Conduct minor maintenance of sampling equipment including, washing, cleaning, and fueling. Enter results into computer databases. Review results for any anomalies or inconsistencies. Conduct general analysis of results using Microsoft Excel and ArcGIS Mapping software. Create communication materials (letters, signs, website materials, etc.) Communicate and coordinate with internal and external partners including meeting and sampling dates, times and locations. Answer general questions from the public. Scan and digitize records. Assist with special events, such as field days and environmental education events.  Assist with native prairie restoration including invasive species removal, prescribed burning, and native seed collection/processing.Education, Training and Experience:
Any combination of training, experience, or education related to natural resources, soils, biology, agronomy, physical sciences or related field. Experience conducting field work and collecting environmental data for scientific or compliance purposes. Candidates pursuing a degree or career in environmental sciences is preferred.

Special Requirements:
Must have a valid driver’s license, or access to reliable personal transportation, or equivalent. Must be at least 18 years of age. 
 
Background Check Statement: Some positions may require a criminal background check which can include fingerprinting due to the nature of the job’s responsibilities. Wisconsin’s Fair Employment Law, s. 111.31 – 111.395, Wis. Stats., prohibits discrimination because of an arrest or conviction record. However, Dane County may disqualify an applicant if the position’s responsibilities are substantially related to the applicant’s criminal history (e.g., the nature of the crime and its relationship to the position, whether hiring, transferring or promoting an applicant would pose an unreasonable risk to the business, its employees, customers and vendors, etc.) Management reserves the right to make employment contingent upon successful completion of the background check.

Physical and Environmental Work Requirements:
Must be able to traverse a wide variety of field conditions (e.g., wet, muddy terrain; steep slopes; livestock operations; construction sites; stream corridors; etc.) and carry equipment up to 50 pounds. Ability to use hands/feet for repetitive single grasping, fine manipulation, pushing and pulling and operating controls and equipment. May be required to operate equipment such as UTV’s. Work will be mostly outdoors in varying terrains and in harsh temperature conditions. Ability to see and hear within normal ranges with or without adaptive devices. Ability to sit and type within an office setting. Knowledge of methods, materials, and equipment used in collecting environmental (soil, water, etc.) metrics and parameters. Knowledge of general environmental physical, biological, and chemical properties. Physical ability to operate power equipment. Ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions. Knowledge of, or ability to learn occupational hazards and safety precautions.  Ability to make minor repairs to equipment. Ability to work well with others. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office software, GPS, ESRI ArcGIS software and databases. Ability to operate office equipment (scanners, computers, printers etc.)Effective written and oral communication skills. Ability to perform general data analyses such as averages and trends.
