What are the responsibilities and job description for the Dental Hygiene Instructor position at Danville Community College?
- Part-time clinic/lab instructor schedules vary from semester to semester.
- Clinics and labs are scheduled in 3-hour sessions Monday-Friday.
- Daytime and evening sessions are typically offered each semester.
This is a face-to-face position at the college.
Commonwealth of Virginia part-time/wage employees are limited to working 1,500 hours per agency per year, which is calculated as the 365-day period from May 1st through April 30th each year. It is the employee and supervisor’s responsibility to manage and maintain the work schedule to ensure the limited 1,500 hours are not exceeded within the May 1 – April 30 365- day period.
Dental hygiene clinical instructors are responsible for supporting student success by creating an optimum learning environment, responding to student needs, managing effective instructional activities, modeling employability skills, demonstrating professionalism, developing cooperative work relationships with other faculty and staff, supporting college administrative requirements, and maintaining competency in their instructional field as defined by the Virginia Board of Health Professions and CODA standards.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Instruct students in the dental hygiene program.
- Follow state standards in developing the program and course outlines, goals, and objectives.
- Maintain and apply current knowledge of the program’s accrediting body, Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA).
- Maintain students records and attendance in an orderly manner.
- Employ teaching strategies and instruction for different learning styles.
- Effectively demonstrate clinical techniques and skills to students.
- Work with dental hygiene course instructors to maintain curriculum standards.
- Possess keen observation, supervision, and evaluation skills.
- Evaluate students’ progress in competency areas to attain goals and meet objectives.
- Maintain management procedures and documentation.
- Meet with students and other educators to discuss students’ instructional needs and other issues impacting the progress of the students.
- Ensure safety and security requirements are met in the clinic/lab area.
- Provide daily & ongoing oversight of facilities, equipment, and student records to include maintaining classroom and laboratory spaces and upkeep of assigned equipment.
- Maintain ethical standards, i.e. student confidentiality, honesty, HIPAA, OSHA standards, etc.
- Attend faculty meetings, calibration meetings, and specialized training activities that enhance job performance.
- Foster diversity, equity, and inclusion with colleagues and students.
- Maintain a professional status that supports the instructional mission by: participating in professional development activities to maintain currency in field, maintaining current credentials or licensures as required by program or accreditation, participating in professional development opportunities to advance teaching skills and strategies.
- Maintain positive interaction with other instructors and professional staff.
- Check and respond to email correspondence in a timely manner.
- Other job-related duties as assigned.

- Dental hygienist licensed in Virginia or eligible for Virginia license.
- Bachelor’s degree in any field, preferably in Dental Hygiene or related health/science field.
- Graduate of a CODA accredited dental hygiene program.
- Current and unencumbered dental hygiene license in Virginia.
- Current Basic Life Support certification (CPR/AED).
KSA’s:
- Ability to effectively teach in clinics and labs.

- Proficient with current applications in computer technology (Microsoft Word, Excel, Canvas, etc.)
- Knowledge of Eaglesoft Practice Management Software.
- Excellent interpersonal and time-management skills.
- Skilled in written and oral communication.
- Ability to communicate with a diverse community of faculty, staff, students, and patients.
- Ability to exercise discretion and use sound judgement in decision making.
- Skilled in monitoring, mentoring, and evaluating.
- Skilled in developing, implementing, and communicating program/college policies and procedures.
- Knowledge and experience in equipment troubleshooting.
- Ability to connect classroom learning outcomes and dental hygiene/scientific language to instruction in clinics/labs.
- Ability to utilize campus resources including software and college learning management systems.
- Local anesthesia and nitrous oxide certification
- At least two years or the equivalent of full-time experience as a registered dental hygienist
- Prior teaching experience
