First Flight Middle School is searching for a band director to carry on and expand a tradition of musical excellence. The FFMS band director is responsible for overseeing all aspects of a comprehensive middle school band program, including recruiting, planning, teaching, performing, and carrying out related administrative tasks.
Key Responsibilities:
- Instructional Planning and Delivery:
- Develop and implement a comprehensive middle school band curriculum aligned with state and district standards.
- Plan daily lessons and rehearsals to address individual student needs and progress.
- Teach proper instrument technique, sight-reading, music theory, and ensemble performance skills.
- Conduct rehearsals with a focus on musical interpretation, dynamics, phrasing, and overall ensemble sound.
- Performance Preparation:
- Select appropriate repertoire for concerts, festivals, and other performances, considering student abilities and musical interests.
- Prepare students for performances through rehearsals, sectionals, and individual coaching.
- Lead the band in concerts and other public performances.
- Student Management and Leadership:
- Recruit and audition new band members.
- Foster a positive and inclusive band environment where students feel motivated and supported.
- Monitor student progress and provide constructive feedback.
- Address student behavior issues and maintain a disciplined rehearsal environment.
- Administrative Tasks:
- Manage band equipment, including inventory, maintenance, and repairs
- Maintain and expand the music library
- Coordinate with school administration regarding scheduling, budgets, and performance logistics
- Communicate with parents regarding student progress and upcoming performances
- Collaborate with other music teachers within the school and district
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Music Education
- Valid teaching license with appropriate music endorsements
- Demonstrated proficiency in conducting and playing multiple instruments
- Experience teaching middle school band
- Strong leadership and communication skills
- Ability to work effectively with students of diverse abilities and backgrounds
