Position Purpose
To support students with disabilities across Geisel’s MD, MPH , and MS degree programs, ensuring that Geisel is meeting its responsibilities under the Americans with Disabilities Act ( ADA ), Section 504 of the 1973 Rehabilitation Act, and other state and federal disability-related related laws and that provide discrimination protections to persons with disabilities. Works with students affiliated with the Geisel School of Medicine in the processes to request and receive reasonable accommodations to ensure their equal opportunity to participate in, benefit from, and access Geisel’s educational programs, services, and activities.

The Office of Academic Advising & Accessibility at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth College is seeking an Assistant Director, Accessibility Services professional with at least 3 years of experience working with students with disabilities in a higher educational setting. A master’s degree in education, counseling, social work, psychology, or a related field is preferred.

The ideal candidate has a strong understanding of disability laws, regulations, and policies, along with experience working with diverse student populations, including those with complex disabilities. They possess excellent case management, problem-solving, and communication skills, with a proven track record of balancing complex cases and developing innovative solutions. Above all, they are passionate about creating inclusive learning environments, committed to advancing the field of disability services, and driven by a desire to remove barriers and facilitate access for students.

As the Assistant Director, Accessibility Services at Dartmouth, you will join a team of innovators and leaders in disability services, dedicated to advancing inclusive education. Required Qualifications - Education and Yrs Exp Masters plus 3-5 years' experience or equivalent combination of education and experience

Required Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge And Abilities
  • Masters’s plus 3 to 5 years’ experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Master’s degree in education, counseling, social work, psychology, or a related field.
  • At least 3 years working with students with disabilities in a higher educational setting.
  • Expertise with interpreting a range of disability documentation (including neuropsychological evaluations), understanding and applying the ADAAA , Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and relevant case law, and determining reasonable academic adjustments and services in classroom, clinical, and laboratory settings.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with a diverse population of students, faculty, and staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain student confidentially and trust.
  • Commitment to promoting equity, inclusion, and diversity within the educational setting.


Preferred Qualifications
  • At least 3 years of experience working with graduate and professional students, particularly in the health sciences.
  • Knowledge of assistive technologies and their applications in a clinical setting.
  • Certification in disability services or a related field.

Description
Student Accommodations and Support
  • Independently works with Geisel professional degree program students (MD, MPH , MS), administrators, and faculty via the interactive process.
  • Adeptly reviews and analyzes private disability documentation (such as medical records, psychological evaluations, neuropsychological reports) and relevant legal guidance to determine disability status, and if reasonable accommodations, auxiliary aids and services, and other innovative solutions are needed to eliminate or mitigate disability barriers.
  • Consults with Geisel’s curricular and assessment teams to ensure reasonable accommodations do not fundamentally alter the specific program in which the student is enrolled.
  • Consults with on- and off-campus medical, psychological, technology, and disability determination professionals in the review of student documentation as appropriate.
  • Provides ongoing counsel and support to a caseload of students to support them in better understanding the nexus of their disabilities and their Geisel experience; to problem-solve and potentially refine strategies, assistive technologies, and/or reasonable accommodations; connecting students with relevant on- and off-campus resources to foster autonomy.
  • Offers guidance and support to students with disabilities in navigating dynamic, fast-paced learning environments and developing self-advocacy skills.

Compliance and Recordkeeping
  • Ensures compliance with federal, state, and institutional policies related to disability services, including the Americans with Disabilities Act ( ADA ) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act.
  • Collaborates with Geisel’s various support teams to ensure reasonable accommodations are carried out appropriately.
  • Collaborates with Dartmouth Office of Student Accessibility Services and other Dartmouth offices to ensure students’ equal access to Geisel’s curricular and co-curricular activities consistent with overarching Dartmouth policies.
  • Maintains accurate and confidential records of student requests, determinations, interactions, accommodations, and services provided.
  • Prepares reports and documentation as required for compliance and institutional purposes.

Awareness Building and Outreach
  • Works closely with Geisel faculty and staff to ensure understanding and implementation of accommodation and provides training and resources on best practices for supporting students with disabilities.
  • Develops and implements programs and workshops aimed at raising disability awareness and fostering an inclusive campus culture
  • Collaborates with academic departments to promote inclusive teaching strategies and environments.
  • Participates in orientation and other Geisel events to introduce disability resources and support services to new students.
  • Collaborates with campus partners and external organizations to enhance support services and resources available to students.

Continuous Improvement
  • Stays informed about current trends, research, and best practices in the field of disability services in the health professions.
  • Develops and maintain awareness of technological supports for students with disabilities, particularly to technologies used in medicine to ensure equal access (e.g., visual stethoscopes).
  • Assesses and evaluates the effectiveness of Geisel’s disability services provided to students and make recommendations for improvements to ensure access and equity for Geisel students.
  • Engages in professional development opportunities to enhance skills and knowledge.
