Registered Nurses – Med/Surg Units

At Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, we take great pride in caring for our Medical/Surgical patients, knowing that we have very medically complex patients in the region and that we are not your typical Med/Surg environment. Our 63-bed Medicine unit is comprised of 3 smaller units located on Levels 1, 2 & 3. As an RN on any of these units, you will receive support from a phenomenal leadership team as well as your fellow RNs, LPNs, and LNAs.

Our Med/Surg nurses are responsible for providing evidence-based care and continuously monitoring and evaluating their practice to ensure the safest, most comprehensive, and therapeutic care for our patients.

Our L1WC area is a 37-bed, inpatient medicine unit. We care for adults typically on the inpatient medicine service who suffer from acute and/or chronic illness. Our team approach and changing environment make it a great place to learn and build/expand on nursing assessment, delegation, prioritization, critical thinking, and time management skills. We have a team dedicated to process improvement, problem-solving, and team building, which has allowed us to become a unit where everyone is a part of the solution.

Medical Specialties (L2WC/L3WC) is an Inpatient Medicine unit that cares for often complex medical patients. The unit has 26 private beds. L2WC has also been the designated unit for COVID patients needing treatment on a Med/Surg level of care. Although our patient population is very dynamic and challenging, our team approach and changing environment make it a great place to learn and build/expand on nursing assessment, delegation, prioritization, critical thinking, and time management skills.

Our Medical Specialty Care Unit (L3WA) is a brand new, state-of-the-art 16-bed progressive care unit in our new Patient Pavilion. L3WA will care primarily for medically complex patients on the hospital medicine service. As a building block in terms of patient acuity, as well as professional development to our 63-bed Medicine unit, we are poised to provide a dynamic learning and team-based environment for both new and experienced care providers. Whether you want to support patients with chronic illness, acute illness, surgical consultation, or infectious disease, you will be helping them all on L3WA. Come share in the excitement of opening a new unit, working with the best multidisciplinary team around, while also being able to care for a myriad of patients and never finding yourself bored.

The Intermediate Special Care Unit (ISCU) is an 8-bed progressive care unit that cares for both medical and surgical patients. As the only area in the hospital that takes care of both medical and surgical patients as their specialty, the ISCU provides a unique opportunity to delve into both patient populations. In addition, we are the only unit that takes solid organ kidney transplants post-op day 0, which provides an incredible learning opportunity for a student. In addition, the small care area allows staff to build relationships with all members of the interdisciplinary team. As a unit dedicated to practice improvement, working through challenging and complex situations, and providing at-the-elbow education when necessary, a student who will be successful here is one that can adapt quickly, resource when necessary, and is wanting of a diverse patient population.
