Job Summary:

We are seeking a Fiber Optic Characterization Technician with hands-on experience in characterizing and testing optical fibers. The ideal candidate will work alongside lead engineers to evaluate the performance of long-haul fibers. The technician will be responsible for performing fiber testing and characterizing fiber optic installations, and generating daily reports and spreadsheets based on the collected data.

Key Responsibilities:

• Perform routine fiber optic testing, including Optical Time Domain Reflectometry (OTDR), Optical Loss measurement, Span Loss testing, Optical Return Loss (ORL), Polarization Mode Dispersion (PMD), and Chromatic Dispersion (CD).
• Perform fiber optic cleaning and inspection to ensure system integrity.
• Collaborate with project managers and technical teams to ensure accurate fiber installation and testing procedures.
• Assist in troubleshooting issues and resolving discrepancies in fiber optic systems.
• Provide accurate documentation and detailed reporting on fiber installation and testing outcomes.
• Support job-site activities, including coordinating the work of subcontractors and providing on-site supervision as required.
• Maintain safety and quality assurance standards throughout the testing and installation process.

Qualifications & Skills:

• Proficiency with fiber optic cabling handling, including fiber cleaning, inspection, and testing tools.
• Strong experience with Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR), Optical Loss meters, Span Loss, Optical Return Loss (ORL), Polarization Mode Dispersion (PMD), and Chromatic Dispersion (CD) measurements.
• Familiarity with fiber optic data recording techniques and software such as Excel and PDF editing.
• Ability to read and interpret technical documentation, including schematics, drawings, and wiring diagrams.
• Knowledge of fiber optic installation and maintenance standards (e.g., Telcordia, TP76300).
• Strong communication skills with the ability to work effectively in team environments.
• Ability to adapt to changes in project scope and schedules.
• Strong customer service skills and ability to maintain long-term client relationships.

Other Desired Attributes:

• Ability to perform basic fusion splicing replacing bulkhead connectors is a plus.
• Willingness to travel extensively by air or driving for job assignments.
• Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities.
• Ability to work with and supervise subcontractors.

Experience:

• Experience in fiber optic, copper, and coaxial cable testing.
• Ability to follow and implement Methods of Procedure (MOP), specifications, floor plans, and wiring documentation.
• Familiarity and testing equipment turn-up.

Operations and Location:

• Hours of work may vary depending on project requirements and location. Some assignments may require night work or short notice overtime.
• Valid driver’s license with a clean driving history is required.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $25.00 - $35.00 per hour
