Detailed Job Description
Skills, Education, and Experience:
- Knowledge of Medicare and options available for healthcare coverage for older and disabled individuals.
- Familiarity with aging programs and services offered by the state.
- College degree or high school diploma with at least 5 years of experience in the customer service field.
- Certified SHIP Medicare Counselor.
- Effective communication skills in English, particularly over the phone.
- Professional customer service skills, including a courteous and patient manner and the ability to ask necessary questions.
- Proficiency in computer skills for internet navigation and state reporting data systems.
Duties:
- Answer telephone calls received by the NJ SHIP (Medicare counseling) and ADRC (general senior services) hotlines.
- Utilize interpreter services as needed for non-English-speaking callers.
- Provide callers with up-to-date and accurate information about programs and services for older persons and caregivers offered by the division and its aging network partners.
- Counsel callers on Medicare Parts A-D, Medigaps, NJSave programs, and long-term care insurance.
- Provide callers with helpful resource materials.
- Prepare and mail information packets to callers about senior citizen and caregiver programs and services, based on requests or caller needs.
- Learn and utilize electronic recording and information systems used by the agency.
- Record and report caller data using SHIP STARS and/or other database programs.
- Maintain a record of every call received on the unit’s toll-free numbers.
- Respond to consumer letters and emails as needed and draft correspondence.
- Attend the SHIP Update in-person in October.
