The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), a non-profit membership organization with its National Headquarters located near the White House, is seeking a highly organized professional to join our Library team as our new Serials Assistant.

The DAR Library is one of the top genealogical research libraries in the United States and has over 200,000 physical volumes and more than 5 million images in our online databases. Additionally, we have a significant collection of manuscripts, and special collections of family bibles, maps, and other ephemera.

A successful candidate will have excellent organizational skills, be comfortable with learning and mastering computer programs, and have a solid customer service background.

Familiarity with libraries or archives is preferable, as is an interest in genealogy. Previous work in a library, archive, or museum setting is required, and a bachelor's degree in history or a related field is preferred.

This is an in-person position in Washington DC, and works a Tuesday-Saturday schedule.

Job Duties:

  • Handles all of the library's subscriptions to periodicals and journals, including recording incoming materials, tracking and ordering missing issues, and managing subscriptions and renewals.
  • Performs basic cataloging to add new issues to the library's main catalog.
  • Prepares periodicals to be sent for binding, tracks their return, and prepares them to be put on the shelves.
  • Manages orders from the library's online wish list and payments for subscriptions.
  • Works assigned reference desk shifts in the main library and assist with various projects within the department including shifting books, inventories, and shelf checks.

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in American History or related field is required. MLIS or museum coursework is preferred.
  • Minimum of one year of work experience in a Library setting, preferably working with visitors in a reference desk capacity, is required.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and the ability to adapt to specialized programs and databases quickly.
  • Ability to adapt to changing work priorities or assignments and be able to work quickly and independently.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to communicate professionally by telephone and email with library donors and other patrons.
  • Skilled in developing new or streamlining existing work systems or procedures to maximize productivity and executing high service standards.
  • Saturday hours required.

Benefits:

  • Hiring salary range is from $43,000 to $50,000, with the final determination based upon the candidate's overall experience.
