DEA’s Marine Services division is an award-winning leader in the field of hydrographic and geophysical surveying. DEA Marine Services is staffed by a highly experienced group of hydrographers, surveyors, engineers, and scientists with wide-ranging expertise in hydrography, oceanography, marine geology and geophysics, geodesy, and geospatial science. We are recognized as trusted advisors to our clients and take pride in our ability to develop innovative field programs and geospatial products to address the specific objectives of each project.


DEA’s Marine Services Division is looking to hire a temporary small Boat Captain with detailed knowledge of operating on the Columbia River from Bonneville Dam to the Pacific Ocean. The Boat Captain's responsibilities will be diverse and will include safely piloting survey launches, sound judgment on weather and other safe operational decisions, adhering to all applicable USCG regulations and rules of the road, maintaining a proper watch, provision of daily safety briefs and person overboard drills, precise piloting of the survey launch along pre-planned survey lines, performing safe refueling and routine maintenance as directed by DEA hydrographers and adherence to all company policies and procedures on board as described under DEA’s Safety Management System (SMS) manual.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Safety-minded and confident in operating vessels in close proximity to coastal jetties, pile dikes, marine terminals, and bridges
  • Current CPR and AED training
  • Strong nautical skills in vessel handling, mooring, anchoring, use of radar, and VHF radio
  • Diligent in maintaining a proper watch and mindful of vessel traffic
  • Team player with good communication skills
  • Knowledge of weather forecasting and sound judgment on safe operational decisions
  • Mechanical and organizational skills with the ability to perform regular maintenance and keep boats in safe and clean operating order
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record (CDL preferred)
  • Proven ability to safely trailer, launch, and recover vessels
  • State boating license (USCG OUPV License Preferred)

Conditions and Physical Attributions:

May work 7 days per week at 12-hour days with up to 44 hours per week in overtime for a three-month project. May be expected to work on rotation schedule (20 days on 4 or 5 days off, etc.) for all or part of the project or to work as hours are needed to accomplish the planned work. Should be able to carry heavy gear and participate in the loading and unloading of equipment. Must be able to be away from home and reside in hotels as work progresses upriver. The anticipated rate is $35 per hour.
