What are the responsibilities and job description for the Lead Person Utility/Pipe Crew position at David H Martin Excavating Inc?
Overview:
The DHM Lead Person works under the direction of the Utility Foreman to plan, lead, coordinate, assign and participate in the work of the utility crew that is assigned the construction, installation, repair and/or maintenance of pipe systems that are for storm or sanitation sewers, drains, water mains, culverts, and open excavation areas. This is a full-time position with competitive pay and benefits. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Enforcing job site safety in conjunction with the Site Superintendent and Utility Foreman
- Direction is received from the Utility Foreman and then communicated to the rest of the work crew
- Provides training to the rest of the work crew as needed
- Tasks that are varied and complex, requiring considerable independent judgment
- Assists in determining what equipment, personnel, and materials are needed daily for the job site
- Plans, organizes, and coordinates the work of the crew and provides leadership and work direction
- Provides on-the-job training and direction in the proper and safe use of tools, equipment, and safety protocol, as well as use of construction equipment
- Assists in making sure that tools and equipment used on the job site are maintained and cleaned as needed
- Acts as the supervisor in the absence of the Utility Foreman
- Ensures compliance of all mandated safety rules, regulations, policies, and protocols for DHM, as well as job specific compliance
- Performs skilled tasks in the installation, maintenance, and repair of the pipe systems
- Works in confined spaces alongside the rest of the work crew
- Must be able to independently organize the workload, set priorities, meet deadlines, and follow up on all assignments
- Ensures that the work of the crew is done to specifications and has been performed correctly and safely
- Performs manual labor as needed
- Operates heavy excavating equipment as needed
Qualifications:
- Minimum of 2 years experience in construction/excavation, or a related field
- Strong knowledge of utility locating techniques
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and construction plans
- Experience with pipe laser operations
- Excellent leadership and communication skills
- Ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines
