General Statement of Duties
Facilitates evidence-based programs for the Senior Centers in Lexington and Thomasville.
Distinguishing Features of the Class
An employee in this class is responsible for overseeing evidence-based programs, which includes instruction, promotion and follow-up at the Senior Centers and other designated community locations. The position works within board-established policies and organizational guidelines and reports program progress through periodic conferences and meetings. This position works under the immediate supervision of the Senior Center Manager.
Illustrative Examples of Work
- Obtain certification in evidence-based programs as determined by Senior Center Managers.
- Coordinate and lead evidence-based classes as part of Senior Center programming in the Lexington and Thomasville Senior Centers and other designated community locations.
- Seek additional training as required to maintain certifications.
- Assist with community events as needed to promote evidence-based programs.
- Follow up with program participants to encourage long-term participation in Senior Center programming.
- Maintain records, data processing, filing and reports.
- Administer pre and post outcome surveys.
- Provide weekly fitness room orientation at both Senior Centers as schedule allows.
- Monitor activity within the fitness room and provide assistance as needed. Ensure machines are properly maintained reporting needed repairs to Senior Center Manager.
- Provide assistance to Senior Activities Coordinators as needed in program planning for wellness activities.
- Promote health services for older adults.
- Provide office coverage for evening Senior Center programs.
- Perform other related tasks as required.

- Ability to coordinate and implement county-wide programs.
- Ability to provide assistance for various programs of the Senior Center.
- Must have general knowledge of issues that affect seniors of all ages and abilities.
- Must have working knowledge of the most common diseases and/or functional disorders of the aging.
- Ability to use sound judgement and discretion.
- Ability to use computers, job-specific software programs and multimedia equipment.
- Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with various groups, including older adults, citizen committees, service provider agencies, the business community, and public officials.
- Ability to communicate both orally and in writing.
- Ability to lead classes and make public presentations.
Physical Requirements
- Physical ability to use fitness equipment and lead basic stretching exercises for older adults.
- Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational support functions of climbing, stooping, crouching, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, walking, talking, standing, hearing, and repetitive motions.
- Must be able to perform medium work exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
- Must possess the visual acuity to prepare and analyze data and figures; perform accounting; operate a computer terminal; perform extensive reading; and use of measurement devices.
Education and Experience
Graduation from high school and experience in senior health promotion including nutrition and exercise is preferred.
Licenses and Certifications
- Possession of a valid North Carolina driver’s license is required.
- Must have CPR and Basic First Aid certifications.
