General Statement of Duties
Performs responsible work transporting solid waste and/or recyclable materials from collection sites to the landfill.
Distinguishing Features of the Class
An employee in this class is responsible for transporting solid waste and/or recyclable materials from recycling centers to the landfill which may include operating tractor trailers, roll off trucks and other vehicles that require a commercial driver’s license. Work generally requires the employee to inspect trucks; provide routine maintenance and cleans trucks; and complete vehicle inspection sheets. Work is performed under immediate supervision of the Fleet Maintenance Manager.
Illustrative Examples of Work
- Drives a refuse truck to pick up containers filled with solid waste and/or recyclables located at collection sites and governmental office buildings; loads solid waste and/or recyclables into truck and operates packer equipment.
- Hauls and places empty containers at the recycling centers to replace full containers.
- Hauls full containers to the scale house for weighing and dumping at the landfill.
- Perform daily pre-check inspection of truck to ensure that it is working properly.
- Cleans, fuels and performs routine maintenance on trucks and equipment.
- Performs routine maintenance on trucks such as greasing lifts, checking tire pressure and checking fluid levels.
- Provides staffing at collection sites during emergencies or periods of inclement weather.
- Completes vehicle inspection sheets indicating miles driven and any equipment maintenance problems with vehicle.
- Assists in training new drivers.
- Adheres to the department’s safety rules and regulations.
- Performs other related duties as required.

- General knowledge of and skill in the operation of roll-off and front-loader trucks and related equipment.
- Skill in the basic maintenance of assigned vehicles and equipment.

Physical Requirements
- Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational support functions of climbing, stooping, reaching, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing and repetitive motions.
- Must be able to perform sedentary work exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects.
- Must possess the visual acuity to operate trucks, forklifts, cranes and other equipment.
- Worker is required to possess visual acuity to determine the accuracy, neatness and thoroughness of the work assigned.
- May be subject to both environmental conditions: Activities occur inside and outside.
- May be subject to noise and vibration.
- May be subject to atmospheric conditions that affect the respiratory system of the skin such as fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, or poor ventilation.
- May be subject to contact with potentially infectious bodily fluids.
Education and Experience
- Graduation from high school with considerable experience operating refuse collection trucks, dump trucks or other vehicles that require a commercial driver’s license, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Licenses and Certifications
- Valid North Carolina Commercial Driver License.
