General Statement of Duties
Performs responsible work in the children, young adult or adult departments.
Distinguishing Features of the Class
An employee in this class is responsible for circulation, programming, material acquisition and leadership. Work is performed under regular supervision of the Library Manager III.
Illustrative Examples of Work
- Shelves returned material; reads shelves to maintain order; checks materials in and out.
- Provides assistance to patrons.
- Collects and records financial transactions.
- Provides new and replacement library cards.
- Answers incoming calls and assists callers with questions.
- Provides information to patrons regarding reference material.
- Provides readers’ advisory and recommends children’s books, young adult books, magazines, and other materials based on reviews and professional journals.
- Develops, plans and conducts programs and events such as craft, STEAM activities, or other related in-house activities.
- Conducts programs for area schools, daycare facilities and/or community organizations.
- Secures building and equipment at closing.
- Conducts library tours
- Supervises staff and operation of the facility in the absence of the Library Manager
- Performs other related duties as required.

Physical Requirements
- Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational support functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing and repetitive motions.
- Must be able to perform medium work exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Education and Experience
Graduation from an accredited 4-year college with a bachelor’s degree in Educational Media, English, History, Social Sciences or Humanities (or similar discipline).
Some supervisory and public library experience preferred or an equivalent combination of experience and training.
Licenses and Certifications
- Valid North Carolina Driver License.
