General Statement of Duties

Performs responsible work in the children, young adult or adult departments.


Distinguishing Features of the Class

An employee in this class is responsible for circulation, programming, material acquisition and leadership. Work is performed under regular supervision of the Library Manager III.

Illustrative Examples of Work

- Shelves returned material; reads shelves to maintain order; checks materials in and out.

- Provides assistance to patrons.

- Collects and records financial transactions.

- Provides new and replacement library cards.

- Answers incoming calls and assists callers with questions.

- Provides information to patrons regarding reference material.

- Provides readers’ advisory and recommends children’s books, young adult books, magazines, and other materials based on reviews and professional journals.

- Develops, plans and conducts programs and events such as craft, STEAM activities, or other related in-house activities.

- Conducts programs for area schools, daycare facilities and/or community organizations.

- Secures building and equipment at closing.

- Conducts library tours

- Supervises staff and operation of the facility in the absence of the Library Manager

- Performs other related duties as required.

- Ability to assist with planning, implementing and conducting library outreach programs.

- Ability to select appropriate materials for patrons of varying reading levels.

- General knowledge of children’s/young adult literature, reader interest levels and books and authors of interest to children of all ages.

- Skill in storytelling and/or producing crafts.

- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

- Ability to multi-task while providing excellent customer service.

- Thorough knowledge of the library’s collection.

- Thorough knowledge of automated circulation system.

- Thorough knowledge of the library’s organization, policies, and procedures and ability to interpret and implement.

- General knowledge of library techniques, systems and tools.

- General knowledge of age appropriate materials.

- General knowledge of English grammar, spelling and composition.

- Ability to organize work and exercise sound judgment while working independently.

- Ability to operate a variety of equipment both standard and electronic.

- Ability to handle routine and unusual situations related to patrons and the general public.

- Ability to make accurate numerical calculations.

- Ability to use reference materials and develop research strategies using a variety of media.

- Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with all patrons and the general public.

- Ability to lead others.

- Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with co-workers and the general public, including community organizations, vendors, daycare providers, schools, coworkers, temporary staff, volunteers, children, patrons and the general public.

- General knowledge of safety procedures and policies and ability to handle emergency situations.

Physical Requirements

- Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational support functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing and repetitive motions.

- Must be able to perform medium work exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

- Worker is required to have close visual acuity to prepare and analyze data and figures, perform accounting and transcription, work on a computer terminal, perform extensive reading, visually inspect small defects or parts, use measurement devices or assemble or fabricate parts at distances close to eyes.

- Worker is required to visual acuity to determine the accuracy, neatness and thoroughness of the work assigned.

- Worker is subject to inside environmental conditions: Protection from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes.

- Worker is subject to both environmental conditions: Activities occur inside and outside.

- Worker is subject to atmospheric conditions: one or more to the following conditions that affect the respiratory system of the skin: fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases or poor ventilation.

- Worker is required to function in a narrow aisles or passageways.

- Worker may be in contact with potentially infectious bodily fluids during the performance of his/her duties.

Education and Experience

Graduation from an accredited 4-year college with a bachelor’s degree in Educational Media, English, History, Social Sciences or Humanities (or similar discipline).

Some supervisory and public library experience preferred or an equivalent combination of experience and training.

Licenses and Certifications

- Valid North Carolina Driver License.
