GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB
Office:
An employee in this class performs general office support duties in a school, department or unit where duties and appropriate actions are clearly defined. Work includes filing, answering the telephone, relaying information, routine word processing or data entry work, customer service, or records maintenance work. Work also may include the dispatching of personnel for services to the school or public. The employee is expected to have a general understanding of the work unit and its services to respond to inquiries; non-routine questions or situations are referred to others.
Specific oral and/or written instructions are available to apply to most work situations; however, independent decisions are made within parameters. Work may include the use of specific computer software/programs.
Teacher Asst:
An employee in this class performs any combination of classroom duties to assist teaching staff of upper grades (4th-5th). The employee must have the ability to execute details of the work according to general, broad based instructions, and be able to adapt to frequent and varying changes in work. The employee provides guidance and coaching to students, and requires the operation of various media and technology equipment such as computer, television, video/audio player, projector, document camera, laminator, copy machine and various other office equipment. Because of the nature of the work, the employee may be exposed to human blood and body fluids, and is subject to the OSHA requirements on blood borne pathogens. The employee is subject to work both inside and outside, and varied work environments. This category of teacher assistant may be required to obtain a CDL license to drive a school bus. Assignment to this duty will be dependent upon the principal of the school and the need for drivers.
Work is performed under the supervision of a school, classroom teacher, department or unit supervisor and is evaluated through observation, conferences, and the quality and effectiveness of work completed.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Discusses assigned duties with classroom teacher to coordinate instructional
- Answers telephone; directs calls or visitors and gives information based on the type of request; may dispatch personnel for services to the school area or
- Performs duties as assigned in such areas as the principal's office, classrooms, guidance office, media center, computer labs, or other special area
- Receives and delivers
- Supervises groups to and in the cafeteria, library, playground, restrooms and other areas as
- Word processes letters, reports and other materials; processes rough drafts from verbal,
handwritten or other marked copy.
- Assists others in the use of computer programs (teachers and students).
- Proofs reports and materials for completeness and
- Assists teacher in preparation of reports and/or
- Places materials and records in alphabetical or numerical order for proper filing into the appropriate record keeping

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
- Knowledge of basic needs and developmental stages of

- Ability to communicate effectively in person and by telephone with students, staff and

- Ability to input data or word process with accuracy at the speed required by the particular program or position utilizing the services of this
- Graduation from high school and one year of experience involving public contact; or an equivalent combination of education and
- Required to obtain a CDL and Bus License.

Highly Qualified:
NCLB (No Child Left Behind Requirements) for Teacher Assistants
There are three options to meet the NCLB requirements for Teacher Assistants:
- Must have an Associate or Bachelors Degree in any field of study or
- Must have at least 48 semester hours of college level education or
- Must have completed the WorkKeys test from a community college and have 96 contact hours in reading, writing, and math
ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of reaching, walking, fingering, grasping, talking, hearing, and repetitive
- Must be able to perform sedentary work exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move
- Must possess the visual acuity to prepare figures and data, operate a computer, and proof
- Must be able to obtain a CDL in order to drive a school bus, if required by Principal.
