GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB
An employee in this class performs lead worker duties and journey level plumbing work by assembling installing, repairing, and performing preventative maintenance to fixtures, fittings, heating systems, appliances, pipes, and water/drainage systems. The employee works independently and often directs plumbers and subordinate crews during projects. The employee is given broad objectives for completion of tasks, and procures needed supplies and labor to complete assignments. The employee is expected to observe the work of subordinate employees, provide coaching and guidance, and report recurring problems with personnel to appropriate supervisor. Duties may also include work in other trades areas such as minor electrical and or building trade fields. Work assignments are received through supervisory personnel and established work order processes, and completion of work is performed independently and with the expectation that a broad knowledge of the plumbing trade field is applied. Employees are subject to working in inside and outside environments, extreme temperatures, and hazards in the work including exposures to loud noises, vibrations, proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical current, working in high places, exposure to chemicals, fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, and oils. Duties may expose employees to human body fluids and thus they are subject to the OSHA requirements on bloodborne pathogens. Workers are also subject to work in close quarters such as crawl spaces and small rooms. Work is performed under general supervision and is reviewed for lasting quality, effectiveness, appearance, and functionality through conference, inspection, and a review of records.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Works as a skilled plumber performing highly skilled plumbing work by assembling, installing, repairing, and performing preventative maintenance to fixtures, fittings, heating systems, appliances, pipes, and water/drainage systems.
- Serves as a crew leader directing the activities of subordinate staff, reviews work completed for quality and safety.
- Evaluates work orders and plans for appropriate supplies and staff for completion of projects.
- Provides instruction and coaching to subordinate staff. Observes the work of staff and trains accordingly.
- Orders and checks that appropriate materials are available. Requisitions materials as needed.
- Performs general plumbing work by assembling, installing, repairing, and performing preventative maintenance to fixtures, fittings, heating systems, appliances, pipes, and water/drainage systems.
- Installs and repairs plumbing fixtures such as sinks, commodes, water heaters, hot water tanks, garbage disposal units, dishwashers, water fountains, water softening systems and heating and cooling equipment.
- Repairs and maintains plumbing by replacing washers in leaky faucets, mending busted pipes, and opening clogged drains.
- Assembles and installs valves, pipefitting, solder, plastic solvents, and caulks joints.
- Cuts, threads, bends and joins pipes.
- Performs manual labor tasks including material handling, maintaining shop area, stocking and organizing supplies and tools.
- Evaluates job requests, prioritizes requests, determines materials and labor requirements, completes assignments and installs as required.
- Performs work in other trades areas such as minor electrical and or building trades fields.
- Develops and maintains a working knowledge of existing and proposed school buildings and facilities.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
- Graduation from high school supplemented by course work in technical or trade skills and 5 years plumbing experience. Licensed plumber preferred. 2 years experience as a lead plumber or supervisory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Possession of valid North Carolina CDL driver’s license is required. If you do not have a valid North Carolina CDL driver’s license at the time of employment, you will have twelve months to obtain the North Carolina CDL driver’s license.
- Thorough knowledge of the methods, tools, and equipment used in the plumbing trades.
- Thorough knowledge of safety regulations, occupational hazards and related safety precautions in the work.
- Considerable knowledge of the principles and techniques of related building, plumbing, electrical and mechanical trades.
- Skill in the use of a variety of hand and power tools necessary in performing mechanical, carpentry, electrical, plumbing and allied building repair and maintenance work.
- Skill in the use and care of assigned tools and equipment.
- Ability to diagnose and repair problems and plan and organize appropriate corrective action.
- Ability to supervise the work of crews and subordinate employees.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to exercise independent initiative daily.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, and the general public.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Must be able to physically perform the basic life functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, and hearing. Must be able to perform heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently; and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Must possess visual acuity to operate machines such as drills and power saws, to perform skilled trade tasks of a non-repetitive nature, and to keep and maintain various records.
